Apple TV + FuboTV: Perfect Match for Streaming, or Are There Better Options?

As a live TV streaming service, I deliver cable-like viewing over the internet without requiring a traditional cable subscription. While I specialize in live sports programming, particularly international soccer, I don’t neglect American athletics, offering comprehensive coverage of MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, and more. Beyond sports, I provide access to a wide variety of non-sports channels.

Apple TV is Apple’s streaming platform device that plugs into your TV. Its fast processors and smooth HD/4K performance make it a solid choice for streaming all of Fubo’s sports events. What else makes Apple TV and fuboTV a great combination? Let’s check out some details.

What Is FuboTV?

FuboTV can completely replace your traditional cable or satellite provider. It requires no proprietary equipment, technician installation, a contract, or minimum time commitment. It’s also cheaper than most comparable cable plans, starting at $79.99/month for over 100 live TV channels after a 7-day free trial.

A third of those 100+ channels are sports-related, but the majority of networks Fubo carries are all the familiar favorites: HGTV, USA, Hallmark Channel, History, TLC, and many many more. FuboTV Technical Features

Like most cable plans, FuboTV includes several technical features to make your life easier and your TV time more enjoyable. All plans come with at least 750 hours of cloud DVR storage, and you can watch on unlimited screens at home, plus 3 on the go.

Fubo has some of the highest audio/video quality specs of any streaming service, with over 130 events streamed in 4K for Elite (or higher) subscribers. Many of these are also broadcast at up to 60 frames per second. While this can make scripted tv shows and movies look odd (“The Soap Opera Effect” – Google it), it’s perfect for high-paced live sports action.

What is Apple TV?

At its core – and Apple fanboys, pipe down – Apple TV is a device intended to make your dumb TV a smart TV, or your smart TV smarter, similar to Amazon Fire TV, Roku, or Chromecast. And it wouldn’t truly be an Apple product if it wasn’t designed to work fine on its own but work like magic in a household that already has iPhones, iPads, Macs, HomePods, and other iDoodads.

Of course, if you prefer the iOS aesthetic and design, the Apple TV will make you feel right at home while using your TV. And you can family-share with up to 6 other Apple accounts, in effect allowing everyone in the family to have their own separate profile.

A few of the cool tricks you can do with your Apple TV collaborating with other Apple gadgets:

  • Put two HomePods around your TV for instant stereo speakers.
  • Arrange four Pods around the room for surround sound
  • Boss it around through your Apple HomePods and HomePod Minis or the Siri-integrated voice-enabled remote control
  • Create spatial audio, a kind of interactive 3D soundscape, with your AirPods
  • Privately share the audio between two viewers wearing AirPods.

Apple’s streaming device currently comes in two flavors: Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K. They currently sell for around $179 and $199 respectively.

FuboTV and Apple TV Work Great Together

Now we can get into why FuboTV and Apple TV are two great tastes that taste great together. Apple’s device is more expensive (in part) because it uses a faster chip, which means faster loading and channel flipping, and less hanging, stuttering, and crashing for you. When you’re watching the big game, that means you don’t miss the big play. It’s one of the fastest and most reliably-performing 4K/HDR10 devices you can buy.

But that’s not the best reason to stream FuboTV on an Apple TV. No, that’s Multiview.

Multiview

Multiview is a FuboTV feature exclusive to Apple TV. It enables you to watch up to four live channels on the same screen. You can change the audio to any of the on-screen channels, and switch one channel to fullscreen, then back to Multiview mode. Multiview works hand-in-hand with the FanView feature (see below).

FanView

FanView is a FuboTV feature available on all platforms that gives you access to the Scoreboard (live scores from the day’s games), Team Stats, or Player Stats widgets. On Apple TV, it’s accessed through Multiview, and you can add up to two FanView widgets with up to two channels. You can also switch between channels by selecting a score on a live game.

How To Watch FuboTV on Your Apple TV

FuboTV requires a 4th generation Apple TV (or newer), running tvOS version 13.0 or higher. How fast an internet connection you need depends on what resolution you prefer for your streaming experience. 720p (most broadcast TV) only requires a minimum continuous speed of 7 Mbps per stream. 1080p (full HD, generally for on-demand, like Netflix or Hulu) needs 10 Mbps per device. And 4K demands 25 Mbps per stream.

Getting started with FuboTV on your Apple TV is as easy as (apple?) pie:

  1. Create an account and sign up for service on the FuboTV website.
  2. On your Apple TV Home screen, choose the App Store
  3. Go to Search (the last option), press the Voice button, and say “FuboTV.”
  4. Select the Get button (if you’ve never installed FuboTV) or the Install button (if you have).
  5. After installation has finished, open the FuboTV app.

Other Ways To Watch FuboTV

Apple TV may become your favorite way to watch FuboTV, but it’s definitely not the only one. It’s not even the only one from Apple. Fubo’s live TV app is available for your iPhone 6s (or newer), iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad 5th gen, iPad Mini 4, iPod Touch gen 7, or pretty much any other iGizmo running iOS v13.0 or higher. Plus you can always access the Fubo website on Safari.

Other non-Apple devices include the Amazon Fire TV, Android Mobile, Android TV, Chromecast, Roku, Xbox One, and most major Smart TVs. See our full rundown of devices for FuboTV for more information.

Wrapping Up

Are you the kind of person who values top quality, even if the difference is subtle, and is willing to pay a little (ok, a lot) more for it? Are you a long-time user of Apple products and more comfortable with Apple user interfaces? Are you willing to trade the freedom to mix and match your personal Internet of Things for an integrated iHousehold? Then you will love the Apple TV.

And while FuboTV self-describes as “sports-focused,” it’s absolutely not just for sports fans. Fubo is a great service for any family looking to ditch cable but would still like a wide variety of channels. And with its exclusive Multiview feature, Apple TV makes a great device for any FuboTV user.

FAQ

Is Apple TV the best streaming device for FuboTV?

A qualified yes. This debate hinges partially on how tolerant you are of the Apple TV remote. Complaints center around two key points: its tiny size, and its imprecise touchpad. The rest of it is just a cost-benefit analysis, though specifically when it comes to FuboTV, Multiview is a big point in Apple’s favor.

Is Apple TV better than Roku?

Yes. The latest Roku Ultra (Model 4802) also displays 4K and contains a quad-core processor, so if any Roku would be comparable, it would be this one. Many users who have tried both still prefer Apple TV for its Multiview feature, though. It also retails for about $70 less, so how much is being able to watch 2-4 channels at a time worth to you?

Is Apple TV better than Amazon Fire TV?

That also depends on what you’re looking for. If you want the best and can afford it, the Apple TV is definitely the way to go. No one disputes that it is the superior hardware. What is debatable is whether superior hardware justifies the 4x price tag. For the majority of people, the Fire TV is “good enough,” and is a heck of a lot cheaper.
