Houston Roughnecks Overview
The Houston Roughnecks are one of eight teams that will play in the newest iteration of the XFL beginning in February 2023. Houston was undefeated in five games in 2020, which is the last year in which the franchise competed. Let’s take a look at some of the team’s notable players and coaches as well as a quick overview of where the team will play its home games.
Notable Players on the Houston Roster
The Roughnecks are led by quarterbacks Cole McDonald and Brandon Silvers. McDonald was one of the most prolific passers in college football history during his stint with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. He was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2020 and also spent a few weeks with the Arizona Cardinals. Meanwhile, Silvers was among the first quarterbacks taken in the 2019 XFL draft.
On defense, the interior is anchored by defensive tackle CJ Brewer who appeared in two games for the Buffalo Bills during the 2022 season.
Notable Roughnecks Coaches and Former Players
Houston is coached by Wade Phillips, who fans may know is the son of former Oilers coach Bum Phillips. Wade also had numerous stints as a head coach and coaching assistant in the NFL, and he was the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos when they won Super Bowl 50.
Ted Cottrell was the defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills prior to joining the Roughnecks in 2020.
Quarterback PJ Walker played for the team in 2020, and his performance that year enabled him to earn a roster spot with the Carolina Panthers.
Defensive tackle Kony Ealy, current Chicago Bears linebacker DeMarquis Gates and former NFL quarterback Connor Cook are among other notable individuals who have played for the franchise.
About TDECU Stadium
The Roughnecks will play their home games at TDECU Stadium, which is also home to the Houston Cougars of the Athletic American Conference (AAC) and can seat up to 40,000 fans. The naming rights to the stadium were acquired by Texas Dow Employees Credit Union (TDECU) for $15 million in 2014.
