The Chinese Grand Prix is part of the Formula One World Championship. The first edition took place in 2004 and ran annually until 2019, when Covid-19 struck China. The event took a 4-year break from 2020 to 2023 but is back in 2024.

The Formula 1 event is contracted to be held in 2024 and 2025, taking place at the famed Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading, Shanghai. The $240 million Shanghai course was the most expensive Formula One circuit facility when it opened in 2004, but it was overtaken by the $6 billion Abu Dhabi course five years later.

The circuit was designed by Hermann Tilke and features a 5.451 km (3.39 mi) track with one of the most challenging corner combinations in F1. Most notable is the demanding 270-degree, right-handed corner combination on turns 1 and 2, whose radius increases as the corner progresses.

What happened at the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix?

The Formula 1 Lenovo Chinese Grand Prix 2024 occurred from 18-20 April at the Shanghai International Circuit in Shanghai, China. It was the first GP weekend of the 2024 season to employ the sprint format. It also marked the resumption of the Chinese GP after a four-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, with the last event happening in 2019.

The 17th running of the Chinese Grand Prix experienced several incidents, with some drivers criticizing the FIA for running the sprint format in a venue that had been inactive for several years. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing won, with McLaren’s Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Sergio Pérez finishing second and third, respectively.
