The idea for the Miami Grand Prix has been around since 2018, when the first proposal was submitted to the city of Miami, hoping for a 2019 debut. Unfortunately, various complications including that with PortMiami hindered the plans, leading to a further proposal in 2021.

Ultimately this failed, with it being 2022 before the race could be added to the Formula One World Championship calendar and hosted at Miami International Autodrome under a ten-year contract. Finally, after years of anticipation and planning, on May 8th 2022 the inaugural Miami Grand Prix took place; made possible through dedicated work by Apex Circuit Design and owned by Stephen M. Ross.

Defined by a permanent-style track, the design seeks to minimize disruption by using temporary infrastructure such as barriers and fences that are taken down when there is no racing. With this layout, the track ensures racing can be enjoyed while reducing the nuisance felt by members of the local community.
