The main reason stated is that pitchers and catchers work so closely together that they need extra time to get in sync. Another reason is that there are a large number of pitchers that need to be appraised and (often) cut.

If spring training isn’t enough to whet your appetite for baseball, college baseball season started February 17. Games are mostly on the ESPN channels — ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC, and ACC.
