Everything You Need to Know About the Minnesota Twins
The Minnesota Twins have been in existence since 1901. They spend the first 60 years of that span having been spent in the nation’s capital as the Washington Senators.
The seasons that are most treasured by this franchise occurred in 1924, 1987, and 1991. Washington’s ace pitcher Walter Johnson helped lead the Senators to the first of those titles. The 1987 and 1991 Twins both claimed seven-game World Series wins, over the St Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves.
The Twins went through a low period immediately following their most recent title, failing to qualify for postseason play from 1992 to 2001. But they were back in contention from 2002 to 10, recording eight winning marks and six postseason berths in those nine years.
Their best playoff run during this period occurred in 2002. Minnesota lost to the Anaheim Angels in the American League Championship Series.
Another down period followed, but the franchise has played well since 2017. They’ve made the playoffs three times during that period (2017-2021), albeit all short stints, losing in the first round that they participated each time. However, 2021 was not a solid season as the Twins went 73-89 to finish fifth in the AL Central standings, their worst record since 2016.
2022 was another poor season for the Twins as they finished with a 78-84 (.481) losing record to finish third in the AL Central rankings. They failed to make the postseason for the second consecutive season.
Fortunately, Twins’ 2023 campaign was a welcomed success. They managed a winning record of 87-75 to clinch their ninth AL Central Division title. The Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-0 in the Wild Card Series to end their 18-game postseason losing streak. However, they were eliminated by the Houston Astros in the AL Division Series.
Since 2010, the Twins have played their home games at the Target Field.
