Everything You Need to Know About the Oakland Athletics
The Oakland Athletics have been one of Major League Baseball’s most prestigious franchises over the years. It has nine World Series titles to its credit, tied for the third-highest total.
The first five took place when the team was based in Philadelphia, in 1910, 1911, 1913, 1929, and 1930. The other four occurred after the A’s had moved to the Bay Area, in 1972, 1973, 1974, and 1989.
The team has had three homes as it played in Kansas City between those stints. And, despite having played games in more than 120 seasons, it has only had four home stadiums. Two were in Philadelphia: Columbia Park (1901-08) and Shibe Park (1909-54). Meanwhile, one was in Kansas City, Municipal Stadium (1955-67), and the A’s have had just one home in California, the Oakland Coliseum (1968-present).
In Oakland, the A’s have twice played in three successive World Series, from 1972-74 and 1988-90.
Since 2000, the Athletics have made the playoffs regularly, on 12 occasions. However, they have not had much success in those playoffs. They only advanced to one American League Championship Series, in 2006, getting swept in it by the Detroit Tigers.
In 2021, Oakland had a solid season, recording an 86-76 mark, but that record was not good enough to make the playoffs in a season that had a 92-win team taking the second wild card (Yankees).
In 2022 Oakland’s season was terrible as they had their worst record since 1979. They managed a 60-102 record making it the worst in the American League. Also, their 2023 campaign was worse with the Athletics managing a 50-112 losing record to finish fifth in the AL West division rankings.
