Currently, the Mustangs are scheduled to appear on ESPN2, ACC Network X (ACCNX), and CBS Sports Network (CBSSN). However, they have a number of unassigned games this season, and there is a chance that they could appear on ESPN, CW or the main ACC Network (ACCN).
If they were to make it to the ACC title game, that contest would be broadcast on ABC. ABC is available with an antenna while the other networks are only available with a cable subscription or a subscription to most major streaming services.
A nonconference contest against TCU may appear on FS1 or other networks associated with the Big 12.

SMU Mustangs Football Overview
Since 2000, the Mustangs have played their home games at Gerald J Ford Stadium in University Park, Texas.
SMU is coached by Rhett Lashlee, who is 18-8 since taking over the job prior to the start of the 2022 season.
History
The school began playing football in 1915 as part of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA). SMU would remain there until 1918 when they joined the Southwestern Conference (SWC).
The team has moved conferences a lot over the years:
- TIAA (1915–1917)
- SWC (1918–1995)
- WAC (1996–2004)
- Conference USA (2005–2012)
- AAC (2013–2023)
- ACC (2024-)
The Mustangs were part of that conference until 1995, and it was during their stint in the SWC that they laid claim to three national titles. Their first came in 1935 while the other two came in 1981 and 1982. During the 1981 and 1982 seasons, the offense was known as the Pony Express with star backs Craig James and Eric Dickerson leading the way.
However, by the end of the 1980s, the program’s fortunes took a hit as they were given what is referred to as the “death penalty” by the NCAA. Essentially, the team was forbidden from playing in 1987 because of repeated rules violations. The team had already been put on probation in 1985 after it was reported that boosters had been paying players in violation of NCAA rules.
This would effectively be the end of SMU’s time as a national contender. It haunted the school for decades. SMU was shut out of the postseason from 1984 to 2009 when it won the Hawaii Bowl 45-10 over Nevada.
However, the team has made nine more bowl appearances between 2010 with appearances every season since 2019. SMU has won seven bowl games in school history with its most recent being the 2012 Hawaii Bowl when they defeated Fresno State 43-10.
In addition to its three claimed national titles, SMU has won 12 conference titles. The most recent came in 2023 when they won the American Athletic Conference (AAC), which marked their first conference title since sharing the SWC in 1984. They also played in the 2010 Conference USA title game but would fall to UCF 17-7.
Rivalries
SMU has a long-standing rivalry with TCU with the schools playing each other in all but seven seasons since 1915. However, the rivalry is likely going to end after 2025 as TCU prefers to play its nonconference games at home. Since 1946, the two schools have played for the Iron Skillet trophy that TCU has thanks to its win in the 2023 game. TCU currently leads the all-time series 53-42 with one tie.
The school has also had periodic rivalries against Navy, Rice, and North Texas that have persisted as late as 2023. However, those rivalries are likely going to be put on hold because of SMU’s move to the ACC.

FAQs
Why did the Mustangs leave the American Athletic Conference?
SMU has been searching for a larger conference to join since asking the Big 12 for an invitation in 2011. The school believes that joining a power conference will allow it to earn more money, gain more exposure and eventually become a nationally relevant program again.
