About the Washington Commanders

The Commanders started off 2023 hot, recording two season-opening wins, but then things went downhill, starting with a 37-3 loss to Buffalo. A 2-5 run did keep Washington in mediocrity at 4-5, but then the bottom fell out with a season-ending eight-game losing streak.

The franchise has not finished above .500 since an 8-7-1 campaign in 2016 although a playoff appearance was earned in 2020 following a 7-9 regular season.

Head coach Dan Quinn took over Washington’s top job in the offseason. He previously went 43-42 with Atlanta from 2015-20, which included a Super Bowl appearance following the 2016 season. Also new to the franchise are offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury and defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr.

That poor 2023 campaign in former head coach Ron Rivera’s final season did allow the Commanders to select second in the NFL draft, and chosen quarterback Jayden Daniels (LSU) will probably be the starting QB this season, whether from the get-go or soon after it gets underway. He will likely be throwing often to wide receiver Terry McLaurin while running back Brian Robinson Jr is expected to handle the bulk of the team’s carries.

Defensively, a couple of newcomers from Dallas, both defensive ends, should regularly provide pressure to opposing offenses: Dorance Armstrong and Dante Fowler. However, they are far from the only defensive newcomers as many others with the ability to make significant impacts have also made their way to the Commanders since last season ended.

Meanwhile, a couple of stalwart returning players will be defensive tackles Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen.

The expected starting kicker and punter for Washington this season will be Ramiz Ahmed and Tress Way, the former a newcomer whose only NFL experience was with the Packers in 2022, the latter having been with the Commanders since 2014.
