There are few experiences that are more intense than watching Raw in person. While the show was famous for taking place in gyms and smaller arenas during the 90s, live shows now take place in arenas that hold tens of thousands of people.

In addition to the content that is televised to a national audience, the live crowd will be treated to several dark matches that are not shown on television. The matches that take place before the show tend to feature performers who are looking to gain experience. This contrasts with the matches after the show ends that tend to feature the company’s biggest stars.

Raw Origins

On Jan 11, 1993, Monday Night Raw made its debut on USA Network. In 1997, the name of the show was changed to RAW IS WAR as a nod to the ongoing Monday Night Wars between WWE and its chief rival World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

Between 1995 and 2001, WCW had a TV show called Nitro that aired on TNT. After WWE owner Vince McMahon bought WCW in March 2001, the show reverted back to its original moniker as the war had come to an end.

After the purchase, McMahon decided to make Raw into its own brand with an exclusive roster and championship belt. Smackdown, the company’s other main show, was also converted into its own brand after the purchase of WCW.

Throughout 2011, wrestlers from both rosters frequently appeared on Raw, and it was renamed Raw SuperShow until 2012. Although the original brand split ended in 2012, it was reinstated in 2016 and remains in place today.

Our Choice

If it’s Raw you’re after, Sling Blue is the champ. It’s got USA Network, and it’s way cheaper than those other guys like Fubo or Hulu. Now, the DVR isn’t as fancy, but honestly, how much Raw can one person record? The picture’s sharp, and it works on my phone, laptop, and smart TV without a hitch. Plus, Sling’s got this ‘catch-up’ feature, so you can rewind live TV if you miss those first few punches. Simple, reliable, and easy on the wallet – what more could you want?
