The biggest change for the Seahawks entering their 2024 season was at the top with the departure of head coach Pete Carroll from that role. He was replaced by Mike Macdonald, who has extensive coaching experience with the Ravens although this will be his first time serving as a head coach at any level.
However, one valuable stable element of the Seahawks organization this year is quarterback Geno Smith. He had initially seen some action for Seattle during the 2020 and 2021 seasons, the latter when Russell Wilson was hurt and took over the starting job completely a year later after Smith departed for Denver. Smith was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year in 2022 and received Pro Bowl accolades that year and the next.
Meanwhile, Ryan Grubb has made the short move from the Seattle-based University of Washington to become the Seahawks’ offensive coordinator. He had helped the Huskies to a berth in the collegiate national championship game a year ago. On the other side of the field, Aden Durde will take over as defensive coordinator after serving as the Cowboys’ defensive line coach for the past three seasons.
The hope for the organization and its fans is that the team will pull itself out of the mediocre state that it has been in the past few years, following a 7-10 campaign in 2021 with two 9-8 seasons. Before then, from 2012-20, Seattle had done no worse than 9-7 (2017), otherwise posting 10+-win seasons.
As far as player personnel is concerned, the team has appeared to improve its offensive line with some newcomers, including guards Christian Haynes (UConn) and Laken Tomlinson (Jets) and center Nick Harris (Browns). Meanwhile, the wide receiver core should be especially solid with returners Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba comprising it.
The biggest offseason signings on the defensive side were of tackles Johnathan Hankins (Cowboys) and Byron Murphy II (Texas) while end Leonard Williams (Giants) was acquired in the middle of the 2023 season. Returners linebacker Boye Mafe and cornerback Devon Witherspoon should also be stable contributors.
Kicker Jason Myers and punter Michael Dickson are expected to once again be amongst the best in the sport.
