About the Clemson Tigers

The Clemson Tigers began competing in football during the late 19th century. They were given their nickname in 1896 by Walter Riggs. Riggs was the football coach at the time, and he decided to name the team after Princeton, which was considered one of the most prestigious schools in the country at that time.

The football team has played at the Memorial Stadium on the Clemson campus since the early 1940s.

Currently, the Tigers compete in 17 different varsity sports — generally in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).

Dabo Swinney is entering his 15th year as head coach of the Clemson Tigers. Chad Morris is the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach while Brett Venables is the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. In 2023, the Tigers finished 9-4 including a win in the Gator Bowl over Kentucky. Although the team finished strong, the fanbase is starting to get a tad restless with Swinney, who has shown a reluctance to use the transfer portal as a tool for roster building.

Clemson will likely enter this season with Cade Klubnik at quarterback. Klubnik took over for former five-star recruit DJ Uiagalelei midway through the 2023 season. On defense, the team will look to overcome the loss of Nate Wiggins and Ruke Orhorhoro who were taken with the 30th and 35th picks in the NFL draft.

The Tigers will not have an opportunity to ease into the 2024 season as it will open against Georgia on Aug 31. Some have dubbed this game an early elimination game as it relates to the College Football Playoff. Although there has been some leeway for teams with one loss in recent years, a win against Georgia could be what they need to put themselves back into the national title conversation.

A loss may be difficult to overcome unless Florida State overperforms or some other ACC school has a stronger-than-expected year. At number 15 in the country, the Seminoles are currently the highest-ranked team the Tigers play all season after their tilt with Georgia.

The last time Clemson won a national title was in 2018 when they defeated Alabama in the College Football Playoff (CFP) final. The Tigers have also won national titles in 1981 and 2016. In addition, Clemson has won 13 ACC championships with its most recent coming in 2022.

Receivers Tee Higgins and DeAndre Hopkins are perhaps the most notable Clemson Tigers to play in the NFL today. Other notable NFL stars include linebacker Isaiah Simmons and quarterbacks DeShaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence.
