Louisiana State University’s basketball programs both possess a tremendous amount of history.

On the men’s side, Pete Maravich averaged 44 points per game during his time in Baton Rouge. Meanwhile, Sylvia Fowles and Seimone Augustus proved pivotal to the women’s team’s historic successes.

Both programs have numerous Final Four appearances to their names: four for the men, six for the women.

LSU Tigers March Madness

The selections have been made and March Madness is on for 2024.

The Tigers men’s team struggled the whole season and will not participate in the tournament. But the Tigers women’s team came in second in the SEC in both the regular season and the Conference tournament. They are currently at No 6 in the Coaches and No 8 in the AP rankings. They should do well in the tournament.

Channels to Watch LSU Tigers Basketball

ESPN owns the rights to the vast majority of LSU basketball games. This is the case for nearly all home games, both conference and non-conference, as well as away contests in SEC play.

For example, in 2022-23, these types of LSU games were shown by the SEC Network, SEC Network+, ESPN, and ESPN2 while a couple of home men’s games were featured on ESPNU.

CBS and ABC are other possibilities for these types of games although neither was the case for LSU’s teams during their respective 2022-23 campaigns.

With that said, do note that non-conference matchups that take place away from Baton Rouge are subject to different television and streaming arrangements. In 2022-23, some of these types of games for both the men’s and women’s teams were streamed by FloHoops while the LSU-Tulane women’s matchup that was played in New Orleans was available through ESPN+, and another two were streamed by YouTube.

LSU Tigers Basketball

The purple and gold have been playing basketball since 1908-09 in the case of the LSU men’s program and since 1975-76 as far as the women’s team goes.

Both squads as well as the school’s women’s volleyball and gymnastics teams play home events at 13,215-seat Pete Maravich Assembly Center. That facility opened in 1972.

LSU does not really have a heated rival in basketball although one is developing with South Carolina in women’s hoops thanks to the strength of both programs.

There is potential for one with in-state opponent Tulane, but they have not played since 2008 on the men’s side while LSU’s women’s program is not generally tested by the Green Wave. Being in different conferences does not help rivalry-wise.

LSU Tigers Men’s Basketball

The LSU men’s basketball team had a nice five-year run under the tutelage of head coach Will Wade, making the NIT his first season and the NCAA Tournament his second, fourth, and fifth. However, he was let go by the school prior to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 in lieu of the NCAA uncovering potential violations.

Things went downhill quickly afterward as all 13 players who were due to return for the team’s 2022-23 season left instead.

Matt McMahon is in his second season as the head coach of the LSU Tigers men’s basketball team.

The 2023-24 Tigers squad consists of Will Baker, Jordan Wright (points, steals, rebounds leader), Derek Fountain, Mike Williams III, Trae Hannibal (assists leader), Jalen Reed (blocked shots leader), Hunter Dean, Tyrell Ward, and Mwani Wilkinson.

Historically, LSU has made the NCAA Tournament 24 times, advancing to the Final Four four of those, in 1953, 1981, 1986, and 2006. The team also has a recent Sweet 16 appearance, which occurred in 2019.

However, the program may be best known for Pete Maravich, who set NCAA Division I records in points scored (3,667) and points per game (44.2) while playing for the Tigers from 1967-70. Those marks still stand to this day. Incredibly, he was able to set the total points record despite not playing his freshman season, which was not allowed by the NCAA at that time.

LSU Tigers Women’s Basketball

In a way, the LSU women’s basketball program is on the opposite trajectory as the men’s, failing to be selected to the NCAA Tournament in 2019 or 2021 but very much on the upswing now.

This improvement coincided with the appointment of legendary Baylor coach Kim Mulkey as head coach of the Tigers. In her first season in Baton Rouge, LSU went 26-6 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament while her 2022-23 squad ended with a 34-2 record. The 2023-24 season saw “only” a 28-4 record.

Helping lead the way in 2023-24 are Aneesah Morrow (steals, blocks leaders), Last-Tear Poa, Aalyah Del Rosario, Flau’jae Johnson, Mikaylah Williams, Janae Kent, Angel Reese (points, rebounds leader), Hailey Van Lith (assists leader), Amani Bartlett, Angelica Velez, and Izzy Besselman.

In 2024, Reese is on the fence on whether to play another year at LSU or declare for the WNBA draft.

This program has six Women’s Final Four appearances to its credit. Interestingly, the first came in consecutive years, from 2004-08, and the Tigers fell in the semifinal round all five times. And then, in 2023, they went all the way.

Wrapping Up

Those looking to watch the LSU Tigers play generally need to gain access to ESPN, ESPN2, and the SEC Network in order to be set for the majority of the team’s games. Also keep in mind that CBS, TBS, TNT, or truTV will be necessary for NCAA Men’s Tournament games played by the Tigers, but that is likely not occurring in 2024.

We recommend Fubo for Tigers fans. Fubo allows you to try out its service with a free trial.
