We have a pretty good idea which genre of movie you enjoy watching each Valentine’s Day.
According to the expert analysts at Mindnet Analytics — a consulting firm that studies Google and social media trends — “romantic movies” experiences a 400% spike in interest on the annual day of love. Of course, this isn’t terribly surprising as couples typically pair dinner with a movie. And in order to figure out which movie they’ll watch — you guessed it — they need to Google it.
Over here at HotDog.com, though, we like to take things to the next level. We were more interested in which movie specifically each state (plus DC) was most obsessed with relative to each other. Surprisingly, the results vary dramatically when comparing all 50 states plus our nation’s capital.

Before we get to the official list of romantic movies each state (plus DC) is obsessed with, we wanted to share some interesting statistics:
- There are some romantic movies that multiple states are obsessed with, including Stolen Kisses, Her, Now Voyager, and others
- DC, Vermont, Maine, and New York are the top four interested in romantic movies, respectively
- Florida is least concerned with romantic movies, followed by North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas
- Residents in Pennsylvania were most obsessed with “The Philadelphia Story”
- “Once,” proved to be an “obsessed” worthy movie in the West, including in California, Oregon, and Arizona
- The top romantic movie Delaware is obsessed with? “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”
Methodology
It’s not rocket science to figure out the romantic movie each state is obsessed with, but it’s also certainly not a walk in the park.
The folks at Mindnet Analytics started with the top 100 best fresh romantic movies from Rotten Tomatoes in order to determine a set of candidate movies that each could possibly be obsessed with.
From there, they searched each movie on Google trends using state-wise search frequencies. So, for example, a search for “Gone With The Wind” may have shown that people in Georgia searched that film more than any other state. (Of course, “Gone With The Wind” takes place in Georgia, which is why The Peach State is most obsessed with it.)
This doesn’t mean that the fine people of Georgia necessarily searched for “Gone With The Wind” more than any other movie. It just means they searched for that movie more than any other state.
Now, some movies, like “Her,” come with a fairly ambiguous Google search result. In those instances, Google Trend search filter category 34 was used to only account for movies.
Only search frequencies from Feb. 1, 2019 through Jan. 31, 2020 were analyzed.
