Cheddar News, by Cheddar Inc., is an American live-streaming financial news network founded in 2016 by Jon Steinberg, the current CEO of Future plc and former president and COO of tech and pop-culture website BuzzFeed.
The channel’s first broadcast aired from an iPhone in 2016, and the station was dubbed CNBC for millennials, seeking to equip young people with stocks and technology know-how.
Cheddar News used to broadcast live daily from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) trading floor.
In April 2019, cable company Altice USA acquired Cheddar News for $200 million. Unfortunately, Covid-19 struck soon after and greatly affected the advertising business of the channel, causing it to lay off a sizeable portion of its workforce. In December 2023, media company Archetype purchased Cheddar from Altice USA for an undisclosed amount.
Today, it’s unclear what the future holds for the channel as more layoffs and program cancellations have followed.
As mentioned above, Cheddar News seems to be going through tough times, and the frequency of live news programs and original shows has decreased. As of writing, Opening Bell, hosted by Kristen Scholer, seems to be the main live news show in production.

When it comes to watching Cheddar News, Philo is a fantastic choice. It’s the most budget-friendly option I found that carries Cheddar News, and it comes with a bunch of other news and entertainment channels. The streaming quality is consistently good, and the interface is a breeze to navigate. Philo is a great value for the money.
Cheddar News has been undergoing a downward spiral since the COVID pandemic struck in 2020, leading to substantial layoffs in its workforce. Shortly after media company Archetype acquired the channel in December 2023, reports surfaced of more layoffs, and the programming schedule was cut down significantly. It remains uncertain where the once promising CNBC for millennials is headed.
