The station focuses on significant combat events and the history of the military, with the American Heroes Channel by Warner Bros. Discovery as its main competitor. Originally, the station was known as the Military History Channel, but dropped the last word on March 20, 2008.

Military History’s soft launch prime-time programming featured a five-documentary miniseries known as Battle History, covering each of the US military services. The channel also launched internationally in the UK and Ireland on July 28, 2008, but its slots on Sky and Virgin Media were replaced by its sister network, H2, on May 4, 2013.
