One America News Network: How to Keep Up to Date When You Lose Your Cable

I’ll watch the final debate and town hall before the 2024 Republican Primary begins. I can find complete information in the Viewer’s Guides to the Debates and learn how to follow the Election Returns.

One America News Network (OANN) is one of the most popular conservative news channels — especially after the 2020 presidential race and apparently becoming then-President Donald J Trump’s favorite outlet. Luckily for fans, it is easily available without cable.

In a hurry? Our top recommendation for OAN is Klowd TV. You get access to not just OAN but many other channels on conservative news, outdoor recreation, and combat sports.

As Americans lose faith in mainstream media outlets, many are searching for alternatives to the big networks and the corporate news giants. For those tend toward the conservative side, One America News (OAN) provides a welcome breath of fresh air.

But it can be hard to find — most cable companies don’t carry it. But that doesn’t mean you have to be at the mercy of CNN. You still have options for watching your favorite news network.

What Is One America News Network

OAN was first announced at the 2013 CPAC and launched on the Fourth of July of the same year. It was founded by staunch conservative businessman Robert Herring Sr and his son Charles. Robert remains the current CEO.

For a few years, it ran licensed content from Associated Press and Reuters around 21 hours per day. Lead-ins and -outs from in-studio anchors were added to these. Evenings then featured 2-3 hours of hard-right opinion shows.

OAN didn’t get much attention until 2016, when it began covering Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, carrying full coverage of the then-candidate’s rallies, speeches, and other events. It continued to be an unwavering source of positive coverage and support throughout the Trump administration and the disputed election of 2020.

Over the years, Herring has steered the editorial direction of the news content, issuing directives on which stories should receive more coverage and priority than others. This has been the source of some controversy, with critics dismissing the organization as “right-wing kookery” and its fiercely loyal supporters saying it’s the only place they can find honest, drama-free news.

OAN’s no-frills, old-fashioned, conservative-leaning approach tends to attract an older crowd. Most viewers are over 50 and more likely to be men. The network itself says, as of 2019, that it reaches 35 million homes. It has 150,000 to 500,000 viewers according to Comscore data, making it the fourth most-watched news channel after Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN.

Other conservative news channels include Fox Business Network, Fox News Network, Fox Nation, and Newsmax TV. International news networks that lean pro-Trump include i24 (an English-language Israeli news outfit) and RT America (formerly Russia Today).

OAN is not Herring’s first cable channel. That would be 2004’s Wealth TV, now named AWE (A Wealth of Entertainment), focused on luxury lifestyles of the super-rich.

Stream One America News Network

DIRECTV STREAM ended its relationship with OAN after April 2021 (more on that in the FAQ). But OAN is available on Herring Networks’ own streaming service, Klowd TV. How much do they cost? What other channels do they carry? Let’s talk specifics.

Klowd TV

Klowd TV is a live and on-demand hybrid streaming service offered by Herring Networks. Its flagship channel is, of course, One America News. But it also carries over 130 channels on all different topics, with a special emphasis on conservative news (Infowars, The First), outdoor recreation (hunting, riding, fishing), combat sports (MMA, boxing, wrestling), country music and lifestyle, and home shopping. Currently offering 70 channels absolutely free, you can also upgrade to a Premium plan and get them all for $9.99/mo. (Klowd TV review)

Streaming Devices for OAN

KlowdTV support the most devices in use today. There are KlowdTV apps for the following streaming devices:

  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Android mobile devices
  • Android TV
  • Apple TV
  • iOS (iPhone, iPad)
  • Roku
  • Web browsers.

KlowdTV also supports the Amazon Fire Tablet and the smart TVs from LG and Samsung. Although it does not currently offer OAN, Sling TV offers a lot of conservative news and supports many more devices.

Wrapping Up

So if you’re tired of the mainstream media, OAN is a good counterbalance. We recommend KlowdTV to OAN fans since it doesn’t include CNN or MSNBC and does provide other conservative outlets and a good overall channel selection.

FAQs

How can I get OAN without getting liberal news?

Klowd TV is a liberal-free source of news. No way would Robert Herring let those “elite” news channels on his service, so you can rest easy there.

What happened between DIRECTV and OAN?

Oh boy, what can we say about the DIRECTV-OAN split? Back in 2014, AT&T added OAN to it’s U-Verse TV service. According to Herring’s lawsuits (yes, plural) against AT&T, AT&T asked Herring to create a conservative news network, and offered to carry it on U-Verse in exchange for their support on their forthcoming merger with DirecTV.

The DIRECTV deal went through, but then AT&T started to phase out U-Verse and showed no inclination to add OAN to DirecTV’s lineup. Herring said AT&T deliberately misled the company, and, after some back and forth in court, they settled, with AT&T adding OAN to DirecTV in 2017.

Meanwhile, AT&T found they bit off more debt than they could chew, so they spun DirecTV off into its own company in 2021. It is separately run but AT&T still has a 70% stake. The private-equity firm TPG Capital owns the remaining 30%.

AT&T is now saying that there never was any quid pro quo and that DirecTV, as a grown-up company itself now, can make its own big-boy decisions on whether to carry OAN. Which brings us to DIRECTV’s statement of last month:

We informed Herring Networks that, following a routine internal review, we do not plan to enter into a new contract when our current agreement expires.

Is this due to lawmakers increasing their push for TV providers to tend to the proliferation of misinformation on their TV channels? Or knuckling under to denizens of the DC Swamp who don’t want the truth reported?

We tend to think it is neither. It looks like nothing more than a business decision. Services like DIRECTV STREAM add and delete channels all the time. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter why DIRECTV is dropping OAN. If the channel is critical to you, you must find it elsewhere.
