Oregon Ducks Men’s Basketball: Team Insights and Analysis
Oregon men’s basketball formed its first team in 1902 but it was slow going at first. However, by the 1920s, they had become a dominating force in basketball. They even managed to win the very first NCAA Tournament in 1939.
They haven’t won the Tournament since. However, they have done well in it — especially since the turn of the century. And in 2017, they made it to the Final Four where they lost to the North Carolina Tar Heels who would go on to win the tournament over the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
The Ducks are currently coached by Dana Altman, currently in his 14th season. He has an amazing 321-140 record (70%) during his first 13 seasons.
The main players on the team are Jermaine Couisnard (points, steals leader), Mahamadou Diawara, Kwame Evans Jr (blocked shots, rebounds leader), Jadrian Tracey, Kario Oquendo, Brennan Rigsby, and Jackson Shelstad (assists leader). Center N’Faly Dante was out much of the season but is back.
Oregon has sent many players to the NBA over the years. Two recent stars are Chris Duarte and Payton Pritchard.

Oregon Ducks Women’s Basketball: Team Insights and Analysis
The Oregon women’s basketball program started in 1902, 1965, or 1973 depending on how you want to look at it. The original program was stopped in 1903 by the faculty athletics committee because of concerns about the effects sports might have on young ladies.
In 1966, Oregon entered what would become the AIAW. But it wasn’t until 1973 that it became an official program.
Although the women’s team hasn’t had as much success as the men’s, it has been more consistently good in the last four decades.
In the last seven seasons, the women’s team has been incredible. This is the era of head coach Kelly Graves who came on board for the 2014-15 season. During his first 9 seasons with the team, it has gone 212-90 (70%).
The current team is led by Phillipina Kyei (rebounds leader), Sarah Rambus, Kennedy Basham (blocked shots leader), Chance Gray (assists leader), Grace VanSlooten (points, steals leader), Ula Chamberlin, Kennedi Williams, and Sammie Wagner. Guard Sofia Bell is out for the season.
