Cure Bowl Schedule

The Cure Bowl was started in 2015 with substantial funding from the Orlando Sports Foundation (OSF) and AutoNation. In fact, for its first four years, it was known as the AutoNation Cure Bowl.

It is not only a way to highlight teams in the American Athletic Conference and the Sun Belt Conference but also to promote breast cancer awareness. Proceeds from the game go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation — dedicated to finding a cure for cancer.

Despite its tie-ins with ACC and SBC, the Cure Bowl features teams in other conferences like the Mountain West Conference (MWC) and Mid-American Conference (MAC).

Avocados from Mexico is providing sponsorship for the 2023 Cure Bowl — its first year. The game will be played at the FBC Mortgage Stadium — Orlando, Florida on the first day of bowl games:

  • Date: Monday, December 16th, 2023
  • Kickoff Time: 3:30 pm EST
  • Channel: ABC/ESPN3
  • Teams: Appalachian State (13) vs Miami (Ohio) (9)
  • Last Year’s Results: UTSA (12) vs Troy (18)

Appalachian State Mountaineers vs Miami RedHawks

The 2023 Cure Bowl features teams from the MAC and SBC. The Miami RedHawks had a great season winning the Eastern Division of the MAC and going on to win the Championship 23-14 over Toledo.

The Mountaineers came in second in the East Division of the Sun Belt Conference and third overall with a record of 8-5 — 6-2 in-conference.

Miami RedHawks

Chuck Martin is in his tenth season with Miami (OH). His record hasn’t been great going only 45-59 in the previous nine years. But it was turned all around this year with 11-2.

With him are offensive coordinator Pat Welsh and defensive coordinator Bill Brechin.

Starting quarterback Brett Gabbert has been out for about a month following leg surgery. Aveon Smith will lead the offensive in the Cure Bowl. With him are running back Rashad Amos, wide receivers Gage Larvadain, Cade McDonald, Javon Tracy, and Joe Wilkins Jr, and tight end Luke Bolden.

The defense features linebackers Matt Salopek and Ty Wise, defensive backs Raion Strader, Yahsyn McKee, Michael Dowell, and Jacquez Warren, and linemen Jacquez Warren, Brian Ugwu, and Caiden Woullard.

Appalachian State Mountaineers

Head coach Shawn Clark has led the Mountaineers for four seasons where he’s had consistent success with a record of 34-18 (22-10 in-conference). With him are offensive coordinator Frank Ponce and defensive coordinator Scot Sloan.

The offense is led by quarterback Joey Aguilar with running backs Nate Noel and Kanye Roberts, wide receivers Kaedin Robinson and Christan Horn, and tight end Eli Wilson.

On defense are linebackers Andrew Parker Jr, Caden Sullivan, and Nate Johnson, defensive backs Ethan Johnson, Tyrek Funderburk, Jordan Favors, EJ Jackson, and Nick Ross, and linemen Santana Hopper, Shawn Collins, and Michael Fletcher.

Our Choice

After trying out different streaming options for the Cure Bowl, Fubo came out on top. The channel lineup is packed—over 150 options, including ABC—so catching the game is never an issue. The stream runs smooth, even during big plays, and the interface is easy to navigate without a bunch of unnecessary clicks. The cloud DVR is a game-changer with 1000 hours of storage, meaning I can record without worrying about space. It also works on pretty much any device—Roku, Apple TV, mobile, you name it.
