Oregon State Beavers vs Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The 2023 Sun Bowl features the Oregon State Beavers of the Pac-12 and the independent Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Both are ranked teams and their matchup should be fun.
The Beavers ended the season ranked 19th in the nation with a record of 8-4 (5-4 in the Pac-12). They ended the season with two defeats, but they were against two of the strongest teams in the nation: Oregon and Washington.
The Fighting Irish ended the season ranked 16th with a final record of 9-3. They had an easier schedule than the Beavers but still performed very well.
Oregon State Beavers Personnel
There was a huge change in the Beavers’ coaching staff at the end of the season. Long-time head coach Jonathan Smith has moved to Michigan State. He is taking much of his staff with him. Defensive coordinator Trent Bray will move to head coach next season but Kefense Hynson will do the honors for the Sun Bowl.
Former UCLA quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson is taking over as offensive coordinator. No defensive coordinator has been named. For the Sun Belt, Jon Boyer will be offensive coordinator and Anthony Perkins will be defensive coordinator.
The Beavers top two quarterbacks have entered the transfer portal so sophomore Ben Gulbranson will lead the offense. He played a fair amount last year but this year he has only done a bit of clean-up. With him are running back Deshaun Fenwick (Damien Martinez won’t play), wide receivers Silas Bolden, Jesiah Irish, and Rweha Munyagi Jr, and tight end Riley Sharp.
The Beavers’ defense is also missing a lot of key players but still features linebackers Calvin Hart Jr, John McCartan, Cory Stover, and Andrew Chatfield Jr, defensive backs Jaden Robinson, Ryan Cooper Jr, Kitan Oladapo, Jack Kane, and Noble Thomas, and linemen Sione Lolohea, Joe Golden, James Rawls, and Isaac Hodgins.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish Personnel
Marcus Freeman is in his second full season as head coach of the Fighting Irish. With him are offensive coordinator Gerad Parker and defensive coordinator Al Golden.
Second-string quarterback Steve Angeli will lead the offense as Sam Hartman moves on to the NFL draft. With Angeli are running back Jeremiyah Love (Audric Estime too is going to the NFL draft), wide receivers Chris Tyree, Rico Flores Jr, and Tobias Merriweather, and tight end Eli Raridon.
The Notre Dame defense includes linebackers JD Bertrand and Jack Kiser, defensive ends Xavier Watts, Benjamin Morrison, Cam Hart, Thomas Harper, and DJ Brown, and linemen Howard Cross III, Javontae Jean-Baptiste, and Rylie Mills.

Where is the Sun Bowl played?
The Sun Bowl is, appropriately enough, played at Sun Bowl Stadium at the University of Texas at El Paso campus in El Paso, Texas. It was built in 1963 and was named after the bowl game. But since the Sun Bowl existed prior, where was it played before 1963? When the bowl started in 1935, it was played at Jones Stadium on the El Paso High School campus.
In 1938, it moved to Kidd Field, where it stayed until moving to Sun Bowl Stadium. Kidd Field is now a track-only stadium, right next to Sun Bowl Stadium on the UTEP campus.
