Kansas Jayhawks Football
The Kansas Jayhawks is coming off a solid 9-4 campaign in which the school finished 23rd in both major polls. What does 2024 have in store? Of course, that is impossible to predict, but most prognosticators believe KU will be in the top 25 again, possibly breaking into the top 15 rankings or higher and maybe even winning its first conference championship since 1968 (and second league title since 1947).
If that does happen, it will continue a resurgence, as last season marked KU’s first winning record since 2008 and just its fourth since 1995.
Who Is the Current Head Coach of the Kansas Jayhawks Football Team?
The main reason for this turnaround has been head coach Lance Leipold, who won six Division III national championships with UW-Whitewater between 2007-14, before joining the Bull’s coaching staff and building Buffalo’s program into a MAC power. He’s now looking to do the same with Kansas and the Big 12. His first Jayhawks team went 2-10, but that was followed by a near-.500 6-7 campaign before last year’s 9-4 season.
Which Kansas Jayhawks Football Player Will Make the Biggest Leap From the 2023 to 2024 Season?
What most believe to be the key ingredient in a Big 12 title push is the healthy status of Jalon Daniels, who has the potential to be the conference’s (maybe the nation’s) top quarterback in 2024. But he also missed most of last season, including the entire second half, due to a back injury.
Daniels is planning to regularly hand the ball off to running back Devin Neal – a Lawrence native who may set school records for career rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, and total touchdowns this fall. Wide receivers Lawrence Arnold and Luke Grimm should receive plenty of touches as well.
To the offensive line, Kansas has added Bryce Foster (a 247Sports Composite four-star prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, who previously played for Texas A&M), after acquiring him from the transfer portal during the offseason.
The defense is somewhat of a question mark, although that is not the case at the cornerback position as both Mello Dotson and Cobee Bryant are viewed as amongst the Big 12’s best. Otherwise, the defensive line should also be a strength with Jereme Robinson as one of its leaders.
Temporary Stadiums in 2024
None of 2024’s home games will be played at Memorial Stadium, the team’s usual home, as it is undergoing extensive construction. This season’s non-conference home contests will be at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, KS, while KU’s home Big 12 matchups will be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO.

FAQs
Has Kansas football ever been good?
While the Kansas Jayhawks’ athletics department may be best known for its men’s basketball program, it has one of the oldest college football teams, having entered their first season in 1890. Since then, they’ve made it to 12 bowl games and won the conference championships six times. The last time was in 1968. From 1969, the team’s winning percentage declined, though they secured an Orange Bowl victory and top 10 finish in the AP Poll in 2007.
When was the last time KU went to a bowl game?
Kansas played in a college football bowl game last year, when it faced UNLV of the Mountain West Conference at the 2023 Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The game was held at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, with Kansas winning 49–36.
Prior to this, the Jayhawks played in the 2022 Liberty Bowl against the Arkansas Razorbacks, but hadn’t featured in a Bowl Game before this since 2008.
What town are the Kansas Jayhawks in?
The Kansas Jayhawks is the collegiate football program of the University of Kansas (with its infamous Rock Chalk cheer). The school has a main campus in Lawrence, Kansas, plus several branch campuses in the Kansas City metropolitan area, including Garden City, Hays, Leavenworth, Overland Park, and Kansas City. The Jayhawk’s home stadium is the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, located on the main campus in Lawrence, Kansas.
Kansas is also home to the Kansas State Wildcats, which play in Manhattan, Kansas, not far from Lawrence.
Why is Kansas called the Jayhawks?
In the 1840s, the term “Jayhawk” was given to a group of gold-seekers as they crossed Nebraska to California. Since the Jayhawk is a mythical bird, not a real one, it’s believed to have been a reference to the two birds that frequented the Missouri Valley: the fearsome blue jay and the courageous sparrow hawk. It then became a patriotic symbol to a military regiment called the “Independent Mounted Kansas Jayhawks” which was later passed to Kansas’s first football team in the 1890s.
What is the capacity of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium?
The Jayhawk’s home stadium, the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kansas, has a capacity of 47,233. Its record capacity is 52,530, when fans flocked to watch the Jayhawks defeat Northern Colorado on September 5, 2009. Opened in 1921, it is the seventh-oldest stadium in the country. (The USA’s oldest stadium is Franklin Field, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which used to be the home of the Philadelphia Eagles and is still home to the Penn Quakers.)
