Liberty Flames Football Overview

The Liberty Flames football program by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia commenced in 1973. Liberty started out in familiar territory as an independent before joining Conference USA (C-USA) starting in 2023.

History

The school was an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) independent until 1983 when it became a member of NCAA’s Division II. The school would remain independent as it moved up to Division I-AA in 1988, which is now known as the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). In 2002, the school would join the Big South Conference where they would remain until joining the FBS in 2018.

The Flames have played in a bowl game in every year that they have been eligible to do so. In 2019, the school secured its first bowl win when it defeated Georgia Southern 23-16 in the Cure Bowl. In 2014, the school made its only appearance in the FCS playoffs and where it made it to the second round before losing to Villanova.

Liberty football has won a total of nine conference titles in its nearly 50 years. The first came in 2007, which was the first of four consecutive years in which the team won or shared the Big South crown. The school would also three-peat as champs in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Coaching and Players

The Liberty Flames are led by Jamey Chadwell, who led the team to a 13-1 record in his first season as head coach. They play their home games at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, VA, which can hold about 25,000 fans. The school has played football since 1976 at both the NAIA and NCAA level.

Although most people don’t think about football when they first hear about Liberty, their football program has produced some notable players. Most people have probably heard of Malik Willis, who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the third round in 2022. Antonio Gandy-Golden was another recent draft pick who went in the fourth round to the Washington Commanders in 2020.

Samkon Gado, Rashad Jennings, and James McKnight are other players who have had some success in the league during the 21st century. Jennings has also had his number retired by the school, which is an honor he shares with Jerry Falwell, who founded the school. Falwell had a number 71 jersey retired in honor of the year the school was created.

Liberty’s current top players include Kaidon Salter and Quinton Cooley.

Hugh Freeze is the most notable football coach the school has had. He would lead the team from 2019 to 2022 before taking over at Auburn in 2023.

Rivalry

Many consider Coastal Carolina to be the school’s only true rival. They had played each year between 2003 and 2016, and also played in the 2020 Cure Bowl. Liberty won that game 37-34 in overtime.

The two schools are scheduled to play nonconference games each year between 2027 and 2030. Liberty also has a series of games scheduled against regional opponents James Madison and Virginia Tech over the next several years.
