What Channel is Tennessee Football On?

If you have been a long-time Vols fan, it is important to note that the television contracts are somewhat different in 2024. Most notably, CBS is out and will no longer show any Tennessee or other SEC games. All of them will now be only broadcast or streamed by the ESPN Family of Networks.

For example, the first four broadcasting assignments of the 2024 season went to the SEC Network (twice), ABC, and a shared otherwise exclusive stream from ESPN+ and the SEC Network+.

Other channel possibilities this season include ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU. Should the Vols make it to the SEC Championship Game, you can watch that December 7 broadcast on ABC.

MLB, NBA, and NHL fans should look into Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM. Both provide access to almost all of the RSNs that broadcast local team games as well as providing all the live TV channels that air NFL games.

Our Choice

The Tennessee football team should be exciting to watch in 2024, and you can do just that without cable in a number of ways. Fubo is our top choice to watch the Vols. Fubo allows you to try out its service with a free trial.

Tennessee Volunteers Football

Tennessee Volunteers football is known for the color orange, “Rocky Top,” and 100,000+ fans at Neyland Stadium on fall Saturdays. It’s true that there’s nothing quite like being in Knoxville on gamedays, but when that’s not possible, make sure to do the next best thing: watch UT play without cable.

The Vols are in the midst of a resurgence as their 20 wins the past two seasons (11-2 in 2022, 9-4 in 2023) marks the most in any two-year stretch since Phillip Fulmer’s 2003 and 2004 squads both went 10-3. And, of course, all University of Tennessee fans remember the last such two-year stretch before then: Tee Martin leading the Vols to the national championship in 1998 (13-0) and another solid season in 1999 (9-3).

As far as how 2023 went, all but one of the Volunteers’ wins came against unranked opposition, a 35-0 defeat of No. 17 Iowa in the Citrus Bowl being the lone exception, while all but one of Tennessee’s setbacks came to ranked foes, the lone exception there being a 29-16 loss at Florida in September.

The team finished ranked 17th nationally in both major polls while the 2024 squad is expected by most to be slightly better than that.

Personnel

Much of the focus of Vols fans this fall will be on quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who is a redshirt freshman with five appearances in 2023, including UT’s bowl win, and a lot of promise.

The wide receiver position appears to also be strong in 2024 with plenty of potential there. The expected leader is senior Bru McCoy, who suffered an injury last year and could only play five games but hopes to have a full season this time around.

The running game was solid a year ago, but there is some doubt as to whether that can be the case again in 2024. However, junior running back Dylan Sampson should have another stellar season although, of course, much of that will depend on the strength of the offensive line. Vols fans hope that sophomore Lance Heard’s expected solid play at left tackle has company on the line that also excels and creates holes for Sampson.

Meanwhile, on the defensive line, junior James Pearce Jr, who had 10 sacks a year ago, is expected to be amongst the country’s best at his position in 2024. In fact, he and his teammates’ 41 sacks in 2023 ranked second in the SEC.

The defensive backfield will be full of new players as the transfer portal was busy at that position going in and out of Tennessee. Actually, the Vols do not have a single returning starter there, making the secondary UT’s biggest question mark of 2024.

However, there is quality at that position, so fans hope that not much of a drop-off will occur, or perhaps there will even be an improvement. An example is sophomore Jermod McCoy, who last played for Oregon State. Also, Rickey Gibson III, a returner who served in a backup role for most of 2023 before playing more later in the season, could shine this year.

The Vols are led by head coach Josh Heupel.
