Toledo Rockets vs Liberty Flames

The Boca Raton Bowl between Toledo and Liberty features two teams who are limping into the postseason. Liberty lost its last three games while Toledo lost two of its last three games. However, both of these squads finished with eight wins on the year, which should be considered a success for teams in the middle of the college football hierarchy.

How Did We Get Here?

Toledo represents the Mid-American Conference (MAC) while Liberty is an independent school that will be joining Conference USA for football next year. Toledo’s biggest win came in its final game of the year when the Rockets defeated Ohio 17-7. Ohio finished the year 9-4 and was undefeated in conference play prior to losing to Toledo.

Liberty’s best win this season was a 21-19 defeat of Arkansas in Arkansas. It can also be argued that the team’s 41-14 win over BYU was an important one as it represents another triumph over a squad going to a bowl game. The Flames also took Wake Forest to the wire before losing 37-36.

Keys to Victory

Liberty will rely on running back Dae Dae Hunter and receiver Demario Douglas to make plays on offense. On defense, the Flames will rely on the pass-rushing skills of Dennis Osagiede and Durell Johnson to make life tough for Toledo quarterback DeQuan Finn.

For Toledo, the key to victory will be to establish the ground game. Running back Jacquez Stuart averaged almost six yards per carry over 10 games while DeQaun Finn added another 600 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. On defense, Quinyon Mitchell leads the way with five interceptions while Dyontae Johnson has 72 tackles and three sacks on the year.

What’s at Stake?

Liberty is looking to win a bowl game for the fourth straight season while Toledo will be looking to avoid losing a bowl game for the fourth straight season. The Flames are expected to play the game without the services of coach Hugh Freeze who was hired as Auburn‘s head coach in late November.
