LSU vs Purdue

Every once in a while, a bowl matchup features a pairing that has never happened before, and that is the case with this season’s Citrus Bowl. LSU (9-4) and Purdue (8-5) will be facing off for the first time in their respective histories when this game is played on January 2 in Orlando, Florida.

LSU, who is led by first-year coach Brian Kelly, was having an elite season with visions of participating in the playoffs, reaching No 5 in the national ranking before ending it on a two-game losing streak and plummeting to 17th.

The highlights of the team’s campaign was a two-game mid-season stretch that surrounded a bye week in which the Tigers knocked off No 7 Ole Miss and No 6 Alabama to storm from being unranked to reaching the No 6 spot themselves. However, the LSU Tigers later lost to Texas A&M Aggies and No 1 Georgia Bulldogs in the SEC Championship Game in back-to-back weeks.

One of LSU’s best players is defensive end BJ Ojulari, the only Tiger named to the All-SEC first team. Wide receiver Malik Nabers has shown quality as well, recording 854 receiving yards, 128 of those against Georgia.

Purdue is led by someone who is even newer to his job than Kelly is. After Jeff Brohm left that role after the regular season to serve in an identical one at Louisville, his brother, Brian, the team’s offensive coordinator, took it over on an interim basis for this game.

Charlie Jones, a wide receiver, was the lone Boilermaker to be named to the All-Big Ten first team. This season, he became the initial one in his conference to record 10 receptions and 100 yards in five different contests during the same campaign since 2000.

Purdue also fell in its respective conference championship game, losing to No 2 Michigan. The Boilermakers had rebounded from a 1-2 start to go 7-2 over their next nine contests, leading up to that game. Its best wins were over Minnesota and Illinois, both ranked 21st at the time of the meeting. Purdue has not been ranked at any point this season.
