Florida Gators vs Oregon State Beavers

The 2022 Las Vegas bowl features the Florida Gators of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Oregon State Beavers of the Pac-12 Conference. Florida finished the year with six wins and six losses while the Beavers finished the season with nine wins and three losses. Oregon State is ranked 14th in the country while the Gators are outside of the top 25.

How Did We Get Here?

Florida began the season with an impressive win over the Pac-12 champion Utah, and the Gators would also defeat 19th-ranked South Carolina 38-6 in November. However, a lack of consistency on defense would doom the team to mediocrity despite scoring 20 or more points in 11 of their 12 games this year.

Oregon State defeated Oregon 38-34 on November 26 in what was probably their most impressive victory of the season. Two of their three losses came by just three points, which means that the Beavers could very well be playing in the Rose Bowl if they had slightly better luck against Washington and USC. This is their second straight year with a bowl appearance after last year’s Los Angeles Bowl.

What to Watch For

Neither team is especially efficient through the air, as Florida is ranked 132nd in the country in passing yards while Oregon State is ranked 196th. Therefore, expect a lot of work for Florida’s rushing tandem of Montrell Johnson and Trevor Etienne as well as for Oregon State’s Damien Martinez.

Amari Burnley is among the top defensive players for Florida with 53 tackles, four sacks, and two interceptions in 11 games played. Kitan Oladapo is among Oregon State’s best defensive players with 71 tackles to go along with three sacks for the year.

What’s at Stake?

The Beavers are looking for their first bowl win since 2013 and just their second since 2008. Florida needs a victory to avoid a losing season as well as their third straight loss in a bowl game. The Gators lost to Oklahoma 55-20 in the 2020 Cotton Bowl and 29-17 to UCF in the 2021 Gasparilla Bowl.
