Northwestern Wildcats vs Utah Utes

The 2023 Las Vegas bowl features the Northwestern Wildcats vs Utah Utes. The Wildcats came in second in the West Division of the Big Ten Conference with a final record of 7-5. That was 5-4 for in-conference play with significant losses to every ranked team it faced.

The Utes placed fifth in the Pac-12 this year with an 8-4 but only 5-4 for in-conference games. They managed to lose to the exact four teams that beat them in the final standings.

Although these are weaker teams, they are well-matched and should result in an exciting game.

Northwestern Wildcats Personnel

After Pat Fitzgerald’s firing in a haze of controversy and dismal performance, former defensive coordinator David Braun was named head coach. He is joined by offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian.

The offense is headed by quarterback Ben Bryant although Brendan Sullivan has seen significant play this year. Running back Cam Porter is the primary ball carrier. Wide receivers Cam Johnson and Bryce Kirtz have seen most of the action down the field.

The defense includes linebackers Bryce Gallagher and Xander Mueller; defensive backs Devin Turner, Garnett Hollis Jr, Rod Heard II, and Theran Johnson; and linemen Richie Hagarty, Aidan Hubbard, Anto Saka, Jaylen Pate, and Carmine Bastone.

Utah Utes Personnel

Kyle Whittingham is in his 19th season as head coach of the Utes. He has an overall record with the team of 162-78 (100-60 in-conference). He is joined by his longtime coordinators Andy Ludwig (offensive) and Morgan Scalley (defensive).

Quarterback Bryson Barnes leads the offensive with two strong running backs Ja’Quinden Jackson and Jaylon Glover. The offense is rounded out with wide receivers Devaughn Vele, Money Parks, Mikey Matthews, Munir McClain WR and tight ends Landen King and Thomas Yassmin. Interestingly safety Sione Vaki is playing more and more in the running back position where he looks great.

The defense includes linebackers Levani Damuni, Karene Reid, and Lander Barton; defensive backs Cole Bishop, Sione Vaki, Zemaiah Vaughn, JaTravis Broughton, Tao Johnson, and Miles Battle; and linemen Jonah Elliss, Connor O’Toole, Van Fillinger, Keanu Tanuvasa, and Logan Fano.
