LSU Tigers Football

Established in 1860, Louisiana State University (LSU) is known for being the state’s flagship research school. It also boasts an athletic program that has won 52 national titles over the past 164 years, which places it ninth among members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The women’s track team is responsible for 25 of these titles while the men’s football, baseball, and golf teams have combined for an additional 16 championships. The school primarily competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Tigers football team plays in the 102,321-capacity Tiger Stadium on the campus in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

LSU is expecting to experience another solid season in 2024. Whether that will be good enough for a berth in the expanded College Football Playoff remains to be determined as most prognosticators predict that the Tigers to be on the bubble for that 12-team field.

Much of the reason why LSU fans have high hopes of that being accomplished is head coach Brian Kelly, who continued to improve programs throughout his time at every stop in his coaching career, at Division II Grand Valley State and then Central Michigan, Cincinnati, and Notre Dame. After the Tigers went 10-4 and 10-3 in his first two seasons in Death Valley, a step up would push them easily into that postseason field.

That said, there are notable changes on offense that will need to go smoothly for that to happen. Joe Sloan and Cortez Hankton are new co-offensive coordinators while quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is likely going to be given the reigns on the field after Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels departed and is focused on settling in with the NFL’s Washington Commanders.

And there are changes on defense too, most notably the appointment of a new defensive coordinator in Blake Baker. This side of the ball must improve for the Tigers to be truly elite as LSU allowed 30 or more points on eight occasions last season, giving up 40 or more three times, in the team’s three setbacks. Linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. is expecting to help lead his unit to considerable improvement.

The highlighted returning player on the special teams is kicker Damian Ramos, who hit all 77 extra points that he attempted in 2023, setting a school record for consecutive converted PATs in a campaign. He was also 12-of-15 on field goals; one make with five seconds on the clock posted the final points of LSU’s 34-31 win over Arkansas.

The likely biggest challenges on LSU’s 2024 schedule will be home games with Ole Miss on October 12, Alabama on November 9, and Oklahoma on November 30 and a road battle with Texas A&M on October 26.
