About the New York Giants

The oldest surviving team to join the NFL, the New York Giants played their first season in 1925 — making this year their 100th season. They’ve had six home fields during that time, but have been based at MetLife Stadium since 2010.

The Giants have not had much success since a 9-7 record in 2011 led to a surprising Super Bowl win, having only posted one regular-season double-digit win total since then (in 2016). The Giants have made playoff appearances just twice since that last Super Bowl achievement — in 2016 and 2022 — earning a lone postseason win with a 31-24 victory over the Vikings in 2022’s wild-card round.

While this shows the Giants have been mediocre for a long time, will that start to change in 2024? It’s possible, but few expect a strong push forward this coming season, with smaller steps more likely.

Head coach Brian Daboll will lead the way, whose first year in East Rutherford resulted in a surprising 9-7-1 season and playoff appearance, followed by a disappointing 6-11 campaign a year ago.

How Will Daniel Jones Bounce Back After a Down Year?

Much of the on-field focus will be on quarterback Daniel Jones. He is now in his sixth season with the Giants and has started 11 or more games in each of those years, except last year when neck and knee injuries reduced his number of starts and appearances to just six.

Jones made it to the first day of the Giants training camp though, suggesting his offseason recovery has gone well. Whether he’ll make it to the team’s first kickoff is still to be seen.

A couple of new players who may help him and the team succeed in 2024 are running back Devin Singletary, who most recently played with the Texans after leaving Buffalo (2019-22) (where he also had Daboll as his offensive coordinator during his first three seasons) and wide receiver Malik Nabers, who was drafted sixth overall from LSU.

It may be the defense that pushes the Giants forward this year though. Not only was it slightly better than the offense last year — sixth from the bottom of the league in yards per game, versus the offense’s fourth from the bottom — but it also has some impressive new signings. One on the coaching staff, in defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, and another on the field, in defensive end Brian Burns, a solid pass rusher.

The special teams should be in good hands with kicker Graham Gano and punter Jamie Gillan.
