NCAA College Football Championship Analysis: TCU vs Georgia

The Georgia Bulldogs won last year’s NCAA College Football Championship and earned the right to appear in this championship game by knocking off Ohio State. Meanwhile, the TCU Horned Frogs have yet to win the championship in more than 80 years. If the Bulldogs can pull off the victory, it will be the first time a team has won back-to-back titles since 2011 and 2012. Georgia is 14-0 for the year despite losing four players from last season to the NFL draft. TCU has only lost once this season, which came at Kansas State’s hands in overtime. When TCU beat Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl, they became the first team in the Big 12 to advance to the championship game under the college football playoff system.

Both teams play a spread offense. Georgia has lost four of the last five nonconference games against the spread. Meanwhile, TCU has won its last four nonconference games against the spread.

TCU’s quarterback Max Duggan is ready to move on to the NFL, but he is not overlooking this game. He started the year as a backup quarterback who is a Heisman Trophy runner-up. Meanwhile, Stetson Bennett began his career as a walk-on and finished it as a Heisman trophy finalist. Last year, he won the offensive MVP award during the championship game.

Las Vegas oddsmakers give the victory to Georgia by 13 points. It is the intangible qualities that will bring the victory home to TCU. First-year coach Sonny Dykes says he has never coached a team that was more unified than this one. He claims he has never heard the offense blaming the defense or vice versa.

TCU has more to prove in this game because they have never been called a national powerhouse. While Georgia usually wins by large margins, TCU keeps doing the things that great football teams do throughout their games. When TCU beat Michigan, it was the highest combined point total in Fiesta Bowl history, and they can easily do the same thing during this championship game.
