Washington Huskies vs Texas Longhorns

The 2024 Sugar Bowl features a matchup between the Big 12 Conference and the Pac-12 Conference. And the winner will go on to compete to be the national champion.

It is a rematch of last year’s Alamo Bowl, which the Huskies won 27-20. Everyone expected to see Washington in this game. They started the season ranked Number 10. But they slowly rose throughout the season. For several weeks they looked certain to at least make the Rose Bowl (Sling Guide). And then with Georgia’s loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship, the made it to Number 2.

Texas, on the other hand, was a surprise. Only last week they were ranked Number 7 in the nation — where they had been stuck the entire second half of the season. Before that, they’d been trending downward. Alabama’s defeat of Georgia also helped Texas, who beat the Crimson Tide 34-24 back on September 9th.

Washington Huskies Personnel

The Washington Huskies are led by head coach Kalen DeBoer. This is his second season with a total record of 24-2 (in-conference 16-2). He had previously been at the University of Sioux Falls and Fresno State University.

When DeBoer came to Washington, he brought with him offensive coordinator William Inge and defensive coordinator Chuck Morrell.

At quarterback is Michael Penix Jr. He has a deep bench of wide receivers including Rome Odunze, Ja’Lynn Polk, Jalen McMillan, and Germie Bernard. The primary tight end is Jack Westover. And Dillon Johnson dominates as running back.

The Huskies aren’t known for their especially strong defense, but they do feature a number of notable players: Edefuan Ulofoshio (linebacker), Zion Tupuola-Fetui (defensive end), Asa Turner (safety), Elijah Jackson (cornerback), and Jabbar Muhammad (cornerback).

Texas Longhorns Personnel

Steve Sarkisian is in his third season as head coach of the Texas Longhorns. Previously, he was offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL and then the Alabama Crimson Tide. His record as head coach is 25-13 (17-10 in-conference).

He is supported by offensive coordinator Kyle Flood, who was offensive line coach under Sarkisian at Alabama. Defensive coordinator is Pete Kwiatkowski, who was last at Washington, where he left just before DeBoer took over.

The offense is led by quarterback Quinn Ewers. His top wide receivers are Xavier Worthy, Adonai Mitchell, and Jordan Whittington although he also gets a lot of help from tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders. Jonathon Brooks is the dominant running back and he also gets a lot of receiving yards.

Texas has one of the best defenses in the NCAA. Outstanding players include linebackers Jaylan Ford and Anthony Hill Jr, safeties Michael Taaffe and Jerrin Thompson, and cornerback Terrance Brooks. T’Vondre Sweat on the line has also been critical to the defense.
