Baylor vs Air Force
When the Armed Forces Bowl was first established two decades ago, some college football fans believed it was going to be a new format for the classic Army-Navy game. This NCAA postseason event aims to match the military service academy teams with Big 12 tie-ins.
This year we have the Mountain West Conference’s Air Force Falcons playing the Big 12 Conference’s Baylor University Bears.
The Falcons have been selected to play this bowl five times, and they have won it once in 2009 against the Houston Cougars in a blowout game. For the most part, the service academy teams arrive at the Armed Forces Bowl as underdogs, but that is not the case this time around. The Air Force really aimed high this season with players like fullback Brad Roberts leading to a 9-3 record; Baylor, on the other hand, completed a difficult 6-6 season.
The Bears and the Falcons have previously played three games, and Baylor has won each time. As can be expected, the Air Force really wants to improve this record and winning the Armed Forces Bowl a few days before Christmas, and with an ESPN broadcast, would be a nice gift for Falcons fans. As for Baylor, a bowl victory would certainly improve upon the .500 season; plus, fans would like to keep a perfect winning record against the Falcons.
Defense has been crucial to the solid Air Force football season. The Falcons have been able to hold opponents down to just five yards, and their offensive strategy does not feature too much passing. This team moves the ball with military precision, and it relies on the defensive prowess of Thadius Blackmon, who has already topped the 65-tackle mark this season.
The Baylor Bears have preferred the high-flying passing game under coach Dave Aranda, but they could certainly benefit from tighter defense. The spotlight will be on quarterback Blake Shapen, a sophomore who is looking like NFL draft material, but he has thrown 10 interceptions this year. It would not be surprising to see coach Aranda switching the strategy against the Falcons so that Baylor can avoid turnovers.
On paper, it seems as if the Air Force has the upper hand, but Baylor will certainly try to keep its winning streak against the Falcons in a game anticipated to be a low-scoring matchup.
