New Mexico State vs Bowling Green

The Bowling Green Falcons and the New Mexico State Aggies are this year’s participants in the Quick Lane Bowl, with Bowling Green listed by the experts as the slight favorite, although the teams are considered to be pretty evenly matched.

Comparing the Quarterbacks

Bowling Green’s quarterback, Matt McDonald, is in his third year with the team and is only improving, as he threw four touchdown passes and had a career-high of 392 yards in November of this year in a 42-35 victory over Toledo.

New Mexico State Quarterback Diego Pavia’s passing stats may seem low, with a completion percentage this season of 52.2% and only 11 touchdown passes thrown, but much of the team’s success is due to his scrambling ability. In a game against Liberty University last month, he ran for 125 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns.

Keys to the Game

As is often the case, the most important factor for both teams will be the defense. Bowling Green’s offensive line has struggled to protect McDonald, who took 32 sacks this season and 39 in 2021. If New Mexico State can prevent him from getting enough time to get the ball to Odieu Hiliare, who averaged 80 yards per game this season, Bowling Green’s chances of winning will be lessened considerably.

Bowling Green’s success is often (but not always) tied to Pavia’s ability to run the ball. A week before his 125-yard performance, the team lost handily to Mizzou after Pavia was only able to put up 50 yards on nine carries. New Mexico State will have an excellent chance of winning if they can stop the run game and force him to throw.

Wrapping Up

Last year we had Western Michigan vs Nevada Wolf Pack which ended with a 52-24 score. This year’s Quick Lane Bowl is expected to be very close and a potentially low-scoring affair. Football fans won’t want to miss this exciting matchup!
