Oklahoma State Cowboys vs Texas A&M Aggies

The 2023 TaxAct Texas Bowl features Oklahoma State Cowboys of the Big 12 Conference and the Texas A&M Aggies of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). It should be an exciting and close game.

The Cowboys are ranked between 20 and 22 depending on the poll you read. They ended the season with a 9-4 (7-2 in-conference) record, which was good enough for second place in the Big 12. They lost to Texas in the Big 12 Championship game 21-49.

The Aggies are expected to win this game although staffing changes and injuries have caused many to question this. This year saw a return to form after last year’s losing season. Texas A&M ended the season with a 7-5 record (4-4 in-conference) — only managing fourth place in the West Division of the SEC.

Oklahoma State Cowboys Personnel

Mike Gundy has been head coach of the Cowboys for 19 years during which he has a record of 165–79 (102–63 in-conference). With him are offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinators Bryan Nardo and Joe Bob Clements.

Quarterback Alan Bowman leads the Cowboys’ offense along with running back Ollie Gordon II, wide receivers Brennan Presley, Rashod Owens, Leon Johnson III, and Jaden Bray, and tight end Josiah Johnson.

On defense, the Cowboys have linebackers Nickolas Martin, Collin Oliver, and Xavier Benson, defensive backs Korie Black, Collin Oliver, Cameron Epps, DJ McKinney, Cam Smith, and Trey Rucker, and linemen Anthony Goodlow, Nathan Latu, Justin Kirkland, and Collin Clay.

Texas A&M Aggies Personnel

Texas A&M has seen a lot of disruption with its coaching staff this year. Long-time head coach Jimbo Fisher was fired after two disappointing seasons. Elijah Robinson was made interim head coach. But he has taken the defensive coordinator position at Syracuse. Mike Elko will be head coach next season but it isn’t at all clear who will be head coach at the Texas Bowl.

Similarly, offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has left (he’s returning to Arkansas where he was previously head coach) but it looks like James Coley is taking over from him. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin seems set for the game.

The Aggies have been crippled by injuries. Quarterbacks Connor Weigman (injury) and Max Johnson (transfer) are out and sophomore Jaylen Henderson is in. This could be a good thing, however, since he has enormous talent.

With Henderson are running backs Amari Daniels, Le’Veon Moss, and Rueben Owens, wide receivers Jahdae Walker, Noah Thomas, and Moose Muhammad III (Evan Stewart and Ainias Smith transferred), and tight end Max Wright (Jake Johnson has transferred).

On defense are linebackers Edgerrin Cooper, Taurean York, and Chris Russell Jr, defensive backs Deuce Harmon, Tyreek Chappell, Bryce Anderson, Jacoby Mathews, and Demani Richardson (Josh DeBerry has transferred), and linemen Fadil Diggs, Shemar Turner, and McKinnley Jackson (Walter Nolen has transferred).
