North Carolina Tar Heels vs West Virginia Mountaineers

The 2023 Duke’s Mayo Bowl features the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and Big 12: the North Carolina Tar Heels vs West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Tar Heels ended the season with an 8-4 (4-4 in-conference) record. This was good enough for sixth place — just above No 22 Clemson.

West Virginia also had an 8-4 record but a better in-conference 6-3. This was good enough for sixth in the Big 12. This is the best season they’ve had since 2018.

North Carolina Tar Heels Personnel

Mack Brown has been the Tar Heels head coach for the last five years but he was also head coach for a decade from 1988. With him are offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Gene Chizik.

Quarterback Drake Maye leads the offensive with running back Omarion Hampton, wide receivers Devontez Walker, JJ Jones, and Nate McCollum, and tight end Bryson Nesbit.

On defense are linebackers Cedric Gray, Power Echols, and Kaimon Rucker, defensive backs Marcus Allen, Alijah Huzzie, and Armani Chatman, and linemen Desmond Evans, Kevin Hester Jr, Myles Murphy, and Jahvaree Ritzie.

West Virginia Mountaineers Personnel

Head coach Neal Brown is in his 5th season with the Mountaineers. He came from Troy where he had great success and is slowing turning around West Virginia. Supporting him are offensive coordinator Chad Scott and defensive coordinators Jordan Lesley and ShaDon Brown.

The offense is led by quarterback Garrett Greene. With him are running back Jahiem White, wide receiver Devin Carter, Hudson Clement, and Preston Fox, and tight end Kole Taylor.

The Mountaineers’ defense features linebackers Lee Kpogba, Ben Cutter, and Jared Bartlett, defensive backs Beanie Bishop Jr, Marcis Floyd, Malachi Ruffin, Anthony Wilson, Aubrey Burks, and Hershey McLaurin, and linemen Sean Martin, Edward Vesterinen, Fatorma Mulbah, and Mike Lockhart.
