Coastal Carolina vs East Carolina
The Birmingham Bowl features a matchup between two Carolina schools that are looking to both cap off successful seasons and build momentum for 2023. East Carolina is appearing in a bowl game for the first time since 2015 while Coastal Carolina is making its third straight postseason game.
How Did We Get Here?
East Carolina represents the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and finished the season 7-5. Their biggest win was a 34-13 defeat of AAC foe Central Florida while the team’s 27-24 over BYU represents another key win over a team that is going to a bowl game. Their coach is Mike Houston.
Coastal Carolina is a member of the Sun Belt Conference and finished 9-3 on the season. The Chanticleer’s 24-13 win over Marshall was probably its most impressive of the year. Their interim Head Coach is Chad Staggs.
Keys to Victory
East Carolina will want to get receiver Isaiah Winstead the ball as often as possible in this game. He is quarterback Holton Ahlers favorite target this year and is part of a receiving crew that also features CJ Johnson. Running back Keaton Mitchell also had more than 1,000 yards from scrimmage during the regular season. Julius Wood and Gerard Stringer are both players to watch when the Pirates are on defense.
Coastal Carolina will rely heavily on Grayson McCall to get the offense moving for the Chanticleers. He threw for 2,633 yards through the air while contributing another 183 on the ground. Overall, McCall accounted for 29 touchdowns and had just two interceptions. Sam Pinckney was the top target in the Coastal Carolina passing game while CJ Beasley was the top rusher for the team. On defense, JT Killen is probably the best player on a unit that doesn’t have a lot of elite talent.
What’s at Stake?
For East Carolina, a win would represent another step in the right direction for Mike Houston in his second year with the team. For Coastal Carolina, a win would be their second bowl victory in two years and would be a good first step in the transition from former coach Jamey Chadwell to new hire Tim Beck.
