Analysis: Rice Owls vs Southern Miss Golden Eagles

Southern Miss and Rice have met 12 times, with each team winning half of the contests.

Rice University is part of Conference USA. Mike Bloomgren is in his fifth year of coaching this Houston team that finished the regular season with five wins and seven losses. This team’s last bowl appearance was in the 2014 Hawaiian Bowl. Despite its losing record, Rice University made it into the bowl game because of its Academic Progress Rate.

Southern Miss plays in the Sun Belt. Coach Will Hall came to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, to coach the Golden Eagles in December 2020. The team finished the regular season with six wins and six losses. The team’s last bowl appearance was in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2020.

When Coach Hall took over the team in 2020, he had only 62 scholarship players, 32 short of the NCAA supply limit. He has worked hard to return this program to its former strength, but more is needed to beat Southern Miss. Meanwhile, Southern Miss beat football perennial powerhouse Tulane in September.

One thing that the Golden Eagles are excellent at is being flexible. They have an entire playbook and have mastered every play against opponents that most experts did not think they would come close to beating.

One of the reasons that Southern Miss is so talented for a school their size this year is that Frank Gore Junior has rushed for 1,053 yards compared to only 498 yards for Rice’s Cameron Montgomery and 391 yards for Juma Otoviano.

If Southern Miss can stop TJ McMahon’s passing game, they should easily win this battle. Many teams have been unable to do that this year as McMahon has accumulated 2,102 passing yards.

Background on the LendingTree Bowl

This bowl game has a history of crazy scores. The 2001 Mobile, Alabama game (then known as the GMAC Bowl) set the record for all-time highest-scoring bowl game.

The Marshall Thundering Herd came back from losing 8-38 to the East Carolina Pirates, taking the game to double overtime to win 64-61. At the time, it was the greatest scoring comeback in bowl history. Marshall QB Byron Leftwich, who would go on to play in the NFL for Jacksonville, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, and Pittsburgh, threw for 576 yards in that game.

Then, in 2008, it set another record when Tulsa defeated Bowling Green 63-7, the largest margin of victory ever in a bowl game.
