NCAA Bowl Games

The first bowl game was the 1902 Tournament East-West game, which has retroactively been referred to as the inaugural Rose Bowl. Michigan dominated Stanford, 49-0, in that historic contest in Pasadena, CA.

The vast majority of bowl games are played in warmer climates, a fact that players and fans alike appreciate, particularly those who are experiencing true winter weather in places like the Midwest and Northeast.

However, exceptions exist. For example, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl (Boise, ID), Fenway Bowl (Boston, MA), and Pinstripe Bowl (New York, NY). Plus, the Quick Lane Bowl (Detroit, MI) is worth mentioning as it is quite cold outdoors in Michigan that time of year. But the game is played indoors.

How to Watch College Bowl Games

ABC/ESPN has a near-monopoly on bowl game coverage, so getting a streaming service that offers ESPN should cover your bowl watching needs. The only bowl games not broadcast on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2 are the Holiday Bowl (Fox), Sun Bowl (CBS), and Arizona Bowl (BarstoolSports.com).

To watch bowl games, consider Fubo ($79.99/month), Hulu + Live TV ($76.99/month), Sling TV ($40.00/month), and DIRECTV STREAM ($79.99/month).

Keep in mind that only five bowl games are on over-the-air television channels: three on ABC (Independence, Citrus, and LA Bowls) and the aforementioned one apiece on Fox and CBS. So an antenna will allow you to watch a few games but that’s it.

College Football Playoff National Championship

The CFP National Championship matches up the winners of the National Championship Playoff semifinals at a predetermined site: Indianapolis, IN in January 2022, Inglewood, CA, in January 2023, and Houston, TX in January 2024.

The first of these national championship games were played on Jan 12, 2015, when Ohio State defeated Oregon, 42-20, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.

New Year’s Six

The Cotton and Orange Bowls have the honors in the 2021 season, the Fiesta and Peach Bowls will host the 2022 campaign’s national semifinals, and the Rose and Sugar Bowls take their turns on Jan 1, 2024.

These games are not necessarily played on New Year’s Day, but they are all played around then.

How to Watch College Bowl Games Online Without Cable TV

If you’re a cord-cutter who still wants to catch the action in the coming weeks, we’ve got you covered. Whether you’re looking to watch the Rose Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, or the National Championship, the methods are largely the same – and are explained in detail below.

The easiest way to watch bowl games online is to sign up for a live streaming service. These services are essentially cable alternatives, and they provide the ability to watch live TV whenever you want. Here are the basics of how these services work:

  • Pay a monthly fee between $40 and $69.99
  • No contract – cancel any time
  • Get between 25 and 100+ channels, depending on the package you choose
  • Enjoy networks like ESPN, ESPN2, FS1, ABC, FOX, and more
  • Watch live TV as it airs – including college bowl games!
  • Watch live TV on your streaming devices (Roku, Apple TV, chromecast, etc)
  • Also watch live on your smartphones, tablets and computers – even while on-the-go

So in a lot of ways, these services are similar to cable TV – they’re just a lot cheaper and more flexible. Two of our top recommendations for those looking to get rid of cable TV are Fubo ($79.99/month, 120+ channels), Hulu + Live TV, ($76.99/month, 85+ channels), and Sling TV ($40.00/month, 30+ channels). We’ll go over the details of these services in the guide below.

Other Options for College Football Bowl Streaming

Hulu Live TV and Sling TV are our top recommendations, but there are some other options:

TVs and Devices to Stream the Bowl Games

The three streaming services we’ve highlighted above — Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, and Sling TV — all support the major streaming devices.

In terms of smart TVs, they support LG, Samsung, and Vizio models. They also support any united built on Android TV.

They also support the popular TV devices Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, and Roku.

If you want to watch on a mobile device, any Android or iOS unit will do.

And finally, they all support Xbox One gaming systems. Hulu also supports the PlayStation.

There are more supported devices but these are the most popular.

Wrapping Up

These services are quite similar to the ones we’ve already discussed. They function over the internet and offer a cable-free way to watch live TV. They are all non-contract, as well.

Any of these services would be a great option for college bowl game streaming. And fortunately, most of them offer free trials. You could potentially try out multiple services to see which one you want to keep long-term.

As you can see from the schedule, all the major Bowl games air on ESPN. Our recommended services all include ESPN, so you should be able to watch College Bowl games online for each and every matchup.
