What Is the XFL Football League?

XFL is a professional football league. It is much like the USFL. It is comprised of 8 teams. As a spring league, its season runs from February to May.

History of the XFL

The league was founded in 2001 by World Wrestling Federation (WWE) executive Vince McMahon. The aim was to bring a fun twist to the regular football game. It was to have more entertaining features. And unlike the NFL, the XFL owns all 8 teams.

Initially, ratings for the games were excellent. But after a few weeks, attention waned. End the end of the first season, the league was disbanded.

However, the XFL brought a lot of change in football game broadcasting. The NFL currently uses sky cams, records the sound when the players collide, and even permits fans to see what happens in the locker rooms.

The New XFL (2020)

In early 2018, McMahon’s new company, Alpha Entertainment, announced that the XFL would return in 2020. Although it shared the name with the 2001 league, McMahon promised that the league would be less “sports entertainment” and more of a regular sports league.

As planned, the league started in February 2020. But fate was not kind. After only five weeks of play, the season was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps of greater concern, viewership of that last week was also down substantially from what it had been the previous four weeks.

These were the teams in the XFL for that season:

  • Dallas Renegades
  • DC Defenders
  • Houston Roughnecks
  • Los Angeles Wildcats
  • New York Guardians
  • Seattle Dragons
  • St Louis Battlehawks
  • Tampa Bay Vipers

The New XFL V2

In August of 2020, a group headed by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his ex-wife, businesswoman and bodybuilder Dany Garcia purchased the XFL. There was much activity on the business side of things over the next two years, but no games.

In July of 2022, the teams were announced with a promised season to start in early 2023. On January 5th, 2023, the final schedule was announced. It would start on February 18th. Also announced:

  • All 43 XFL games (40 regular season games, two playoffs, one championship) will be featured on a combination of ABC (7 games), ESPN and ESPN2 (22 games), and FX (15 games).
  • All XFL games will be streamed on ESPN+ and simulcasted in 142 countries around the world.
XFL Press Release

Here is a list of the new teams in the same order as above:

The season starts the weekend after the Super Bowl.
