Formula 1 is the top racing series of Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The 2023 Formula 1 World Championship season started with the Bahrain Grand Prix. The second event is the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix at Jeddah Corniche Circuit in Jeddah, located at the banks of the Red Sea.

Jedidah Corniche Circuit is considered the fastest street circuit. It is also the second-longest circuit on the calendar. Saudi Arabia signed a 10-year contract with F1 to host the race with the prospect of eventually changing the venue in future from the Jeddah circuit to a more permanent custom facility in Qiddiyah.

The race first took place in 2021, so this year will be the third time it is taking place. Last year, World Champion Max Verstappen (Red Bull) won the race, with Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) coming in second and third, respectively. The 2021 winner, Lewis Hamilton, failed to qualify for the second qualifying session due to mechanical problems.

2023 Saudi Arabian Race Results

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez led a 1-2 finish for his team, with Max Verstappen coming in second place. The pair dominated the race from start to finish, leading every lap and finishing well ahead of the competition. Perez started from pole position and was able to maintain his lead throughout the race, setting the fastest lap of the day in the process.

The race was relatively uneventful, with no major incidents or accidents. However, reliability concerns were raised for some of the other top teams, such as Mercedes and Ferrari, who struggled with technical issues throughout the race. This gave Red Bull a significant advantage and allowed them to secure a comfortable victory.

Despite the dominant performance from Red Bull, the race was not without controversy. Lewis Hamilton, who finished third in the race, was penalized for an incident with another driver during the race and had to serve a time penalty. This cost him the chance to challenge the Red Bull drivers for the win, and he ultimately had to settle for third place.

FAQs

What happened in Saudi Arabia Grand Prix 2022?

Mick Schumacher (Haas) crashed during qualifying and was there ruled out of the race. He was not the only one. Nicholas Latifi also crashed during qualifying. Other drivers also expressed concerns about the circuit. In 2022 there were some improvements made to ensure the drivers’ safety. Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) also had an engine failure with 15 laps left and he did not finish the race. A virtual safety car was called out on the 37th lap after Leclerc’ and Leclerc was unable to keep Verstappen out of DRS.

There has been a lot of scrutiny on Saudi Arabia over its human rights issues. The race took place just days after the 2022 Saudi Arabia mass execution. Balck smoke was also seen during the first practise coming from the Aramco oil depot near Jeddah, where it was suspected that Yemen’s Houthi movement rebels had attacked.
