Copa Libertadores on TV

Those in the US as well as in Canada can watch Copa Libertadores matches on their country’s versions of beIN Sports and the Spanish-language beIN Sports en Espanol. This will be the case in those places through at least the 2026 edition.

In fact, several other nations also offer access to these broadcasts on their own versions of beIN Sports. A couple of others that do so are Australia and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, those in the UK have needed to secure access to the BBC’s services, such as the Red Channel, to watch the final ever since 2019. However, it does not appear to have offered coverage prior to that round until showing the four semifinal matches — two first-legs and two second-legs — in 2022.

Fans who are situated in one of CONMEBOL’s 10 countries can watch free broadcasts on TV Globo (Brazil) and Paramount (the other nine countries) as well as enjoy pay-TV broadcasts on ESPN. However, do note that sublicensing will be in effect in some cases.

Streaming Copa Libertadores

beIN Sports is a network of 9 different channels. They are well-known to soccer fans. But they aren’t terribly well known outside of soccer and aren’t available from most streaming platforms in the USA. But the services that do are all excellent.

Note that YouTube TV is a weak option because it does not offer TV Everywhere for beIN Sports so subscribers are limited to a single TV channel. Fubo is the only service that offers all the channels within its own system. Sling and Fanatiz will need to use the beIN Sports Connect app to get the other channels.

CONMEBOL

CONMEBOL is the organization that oversees soccer in nearly all of South America, in the 10 major countries and only excepting French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname, which are in CONCACAF. It organizes the Copa America for its 10 national teams as well as the Copa Libertadores for elite club sides that are based in this region.

Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores features 47 clubs from CONMEBOL’s 10 countries with most countries sending four clubs apiece while Argentina had six slots, and Brazil sends seven teams. In addition, the previous campaign’s Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana winners are added to those numbers. (The Copa Sudamericana is CONMEBOL’s secondary club competition.)

Three preliminary rounds take place before a 32-team group stage, which is followed by two-leg matchups in the round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals. The final has been a single-leg affair that has been held at a neutral site since 2019. Prior to that year, the final had also been played over two legs.

The competition is spread out over a calendar year. The 2023 edition consists of the preliminary rounds being played from February to March, the group stage from April to June, and the knockout phase from August to November.

History

Argentinian clubs are in several of the top spots on the all-time Copa Libertadores winners list. Independiente and Boca Juniors, both based in Buenos Aires, take up the first and second slots with seven and six trophies, respectively. Third on the list is Uruguay’s Penarol, which has five, while Argentina’s Estudiantes and River Plate are next on it with four apiece.

However, one claim to fame that Brazil has as it relates to this competition is having the most different clubs having won it: 10. In comparison, eight different Argentinian clubs have lifted this trophy. Five other countries have at least one club having had won this at least once while no teams from Bolivia, Peru, or Venezuela have been victorious in it as of yet.

Brazilian teams claimed each of the competitions from 2019-22 with Flamengo winning it in 2019 and 2022, and Palmeiras doing so in 2020 and 2021. Palmeiras became the first repeat winner since Boca Juniors won the Copa Libertadores in 2000 and 2001.

The first Copa Libertadores was held in 1960.

Other CONMEBOL Club Competitions

CONMEBOL also oversees numerous other club competitions.

The Copa Sudamericana is CONMEBOL’s second-tier club competition. It is similar to the UEFA Europa League in that respect. Forty-four teams enter it while 12 move over from the Copa Libertadores during it.

The Recopa Sudamericana features the previous Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana winners facing off. It is CONMEBOL’s version of the UEFA Super Cup although the Recopa Sudamericana is played over two legs, not one.

The U-20 Copa Libertadores is an infrequent competition that has been held in 2011, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2020, and 2022 and is scheduled for 2023. Twelve teams, at least one from every country, take part.

The Copa Libertadores Femenina is the women’s version of the Copa Libertadores. It is much scaled-down from the men’s edition, however, as the 16 participants compete over a short two-week period.

The Copa Libertadores de Futsal is that sport’s version of this competition. (Futsal is a form of indoor soccer.) It features 12 teams and is played at a single site over a week-long period.

The Copa Libertadores de Beach Soccer features 12 beach soccer club teams with at least one from every country. It is held every year although the 2022 edition has been slated for May 2023. (The 2023 edition will be held in December.)

The CONMEBOL–UEFA Cup of Champions has been rebranded as the Finalissima. Argentina beat Italy 3-0 in the 2022 edition. The 2023 Women’s Finalissima saw England beat Brazil in penalties after a 1-1 final.

FAQs

Why doesn’t CONMEBOL have a Champions League?

It does; it just calls it by a different name than every other continent on the planet. As for why it doesn’t call it the CONMEBOL Champions League, it is essentially because the name, Copa Libertadores, has so much history, dating to 1960, and means so much to those in this region. Also, it was called the Copa Libertadores well before even UEFA adopted the name, Champions League, which was done with its 1992-93 edition.
