Illinois vs Mississippi State
The experts believe that the Illinois Fighting Illini will beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs in a close game.
Quarterback Comparison
Illinois’ starting quarterback, Tommy DeVito, ended the season with a 69.9 completion percentage, 2,397 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, four rushing TDs, and four interceptions. He transferred to Illinois this season after spending the first three years of his career at Syracuse, where he spent most of his time as a backup.
Mississippi State’s starter, Will Rogers, is the SEC’s all-time completions leader and had a tremendous season, with a 68.2 completion percentage, 3,713 yards, and a whopping 34 touchdowns to go along with six picks. He threw six of those touchdown passes in a single game, as well as two games with five.
What to Expect and Key Players
Both teams were 8-4 this season, both won their most recent game, and neither team has a very mobile quarterback. Defensively, Illinois seemingly has the advantage, allowing only 147 points to their opponents this season, while Mississippi State’s defense gave up 290, almost twice as many.
Illinois’ top running back is Chase Brown, who averaged 5.0 yards per carry and had a total of 13 touchdowns (ten rushing and three receiving). Jo’quavious Marks and Dillon Johnson have shared the running responsibilities for Mississippi State and were both very successful in that role, combining for 1,020 rush yards and 12 touchdowns.
Both teams’ offensive lines allowed over 20 sacks this year as well, which could prove to be a major factor in this game, as both quarterbacks are primarily pocket passers who rely on the line to give them enough time to make a pass.
This matchup promises an exciting showdown between Mississippi State and Illinois, which could very well be a close game that is only decided in the last minute of the second half.
