San Diego State Aztecs Basketball History and Current State

Both the men’s and women’s SDSU teams play their games at the 12,414-capacity Viejas Arena at the SDSU campus on the site of the old Aztec Bowl. And with good reason. Both teams have performed well over the last couple of decades.

The men’s team has made it to the Sweet 16 round of March Madness twice (2011, 2014). And they’ve won the MWC regular season championship six of the last 10 years — including this year’s conference title. They are coached by Brian Dutcher, who got his start as head coach with the team back in 2017. Since then, the Aztecs have managed an outstanding 142-45 (76%) record.

The team started the 2022-23 season at 19-20 in the rankings. But it fell out of the top 25 by mid-season only to finish strong at 18-19. The team consists of Aguek Arop, Matt Bradley (total points leader), Lamont Butler (steals), Keshad Johnson, Jaedon LeDee, Nathan Mensah (rebounds), Micah Parrish, Adam Seiko, and Darrion Trammell (assists).

On the women’s side, SDSU has made the Sweet 16 three times (1984, 1985, and 2010). They’ve been conference regular season champions a total of 6 times — the last in 2013. They are led by Stacie Terry-Hutson who has turned the team around during her decade as head coach. The team is unlikely to make it to the NCAA Tournament this year but the future is looking up.

The current squad consists of Asia Avinger (average points, assists, steals leader), Sarah Barcello, Alex Crain, Yummy Morris, Khylee Pepe, Abby Prohaska, Sophia Ramos (total points), Mercedes Staples, and Kim Villalobos (rebounds).

Like most college teams, the Aztecs have their share of rivalries. The biggest are with the UNLV Rebels and the BYU Cougars.

FAQs

Has any Mountain West Conference team ever won the NCAA Conference?

No Mountain West Conference team has ever made it to the finals of March Madness. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Runnin’ Rebels won the NCAA men’s basketball championship in 1990 but they were a member of the Big West at that time. And the Wyoming Cowboys won in 1943 as a member of the Mountain States Conference.

The highest any active MWC teams have made it in the tournament is the Sweet 16. Three teams have made it that far: University of Nevada, Reno (2004, 2018), UNLV (2007), and SDSU (2014). BYU and Utah also made it to the Sweet 16 when they were in the MWC.

The situation is similar on the women’s side. Two teams have made it to the Sweet 16: New Mexico Lobos (2003) and SDSU (2010).
