What Is WWE Raw?

There are few experiences that are more intense than watching Raw in person. While the show was famous for taking place in gyms and smaller arenas during the 90s, live shows now take place in arenas that hold tens of thousands of people.

In addition to the content that is televised to a national audience, the live crowd will be treated to several dark matches that are not shown on television. The matches that take place before the show tend to feature performers who are looking to gain experience. This contrasts with the matches after the show ends that tend to feature the company’s biggest stars.

Raw Origins

On Jan 11, 1993, Monday Night Raw made its debut on USA Network. In 1997, the name of the show was changed to RAW IS WAR as a nod to the ongoing Monday Night Wars between WWE and its chief rival World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

Between 1995 and 2001, WCW had a TV show called Nitro that aired on TNT. After WWE owner Vince McMahon bought WCW in March 2001, the show reverted back to its original moniker as the war had come to an end.

After the purchase, McMahon decided to make Raw into its own brand with an exclusive roster and championship belt. Smackdown, the company’s other main show, was also converted into its own brand after the purchase of WCW.

Throughout 2011, wrestlers from both rosters frequently appeared on Raw, and it was renamed Raw SuperShow until 2012. Although the original brand split ended in 2012, it was reinstated in 2016 and remains in place today.

Wrapping Up

For the last three decades, Monday Night Raw has been entertaining wrestling fans with its compelling stories and the best performers in the world. In fact, the content is so compelling that WWE sold the rights to the WWE Network for $1 billion largely on the back of its flagship show.

You can watch Raw live on USA Network with the streaming services we’ve discussed above. Furthermore, you can watch archived episodes on the USA mobile app, Hulu, and Peacock.

Most live TV streaming services will allow you to access whatever content would otherwise be available through USA or any other network available on their platforms.

We recommend FuboTV for fans of Raw. Fubo allows you to try out its service with a free trial.

What happened to WWE Network?

The WWE Network was acquired by NBCUniversal for $1 billion and put its existing content on its streaming service Peacock. All content that is uploaded to the WWE Network since April 2021 is available on this streaming service. It may be possible to access Monday Night Raw by using the WWE Network app even though this product technically no longer exists.

Why are Raw and Smackdown currently airing on separate networks?

Raw and Smackdown are on different networks for financial reasons. While NBC negotiated a deal for Raw and other assorted content, Fox paid for the rights to air Smackdown. As Fox shows are promoted heavily during NFL games and other major events, WWE felt that it could get more exposure by putting Smackdown on this network.
