Team Denmark’s Background

Although Denmark has only advanced past the round of 16 at one World Cup, in 1998, the Danes did have a historic run to the UEFA Euro 2020 semifinals last year before falling to England, 2-1 in extra time, and ending its run, so perhaps the 2022 edition of the world’s greatest sporting event will include a breakthrough performance on this stage by the Danes.

The Nordic country had topped its qualification group, beating out Scotland by four points for the top spot. Its only setback in 10 matches was a 2-0 away loss to the Scots in a meaningless result on the final match day. That was followed by an impressive Nations League campaign, during which the Danes beat World Cup holder France twice, 2-1 in the Parisian suburb of Saint-Denis and 2-0 in Copenhagen.

However, two defeats to Croatia kept the Danes from winning their group.

The team’s hopes in Qatar are, understandably, high. Mikkel Damsgaard, a midfielder with Brentford, recently told The Guardian that “we aim to go far and hopefully win the whole damn thing.” Meanwhile, Christian Eriksen, who plays for Manchester United, is expected to be another driving force for the Danes.

A match that many neutrals are looking forward to at the 2022 World Cup is yet another Denmark-France showdown, this one on Nov. 26.

FAQs

Where can I watch Denmark for free in the World Cup?

You can watch Denmark’s all the group-stage matches for free on Telemundo if you have an affiliate near you. (The contest against Australia on November 30 was switched from Universo to Telemundo.) Unfortunately, none of those contests are scheduled for Fox coverage although that matchup with Australia could be moved to it. You can also use free trials from FuboTV and DIRECTV STREAM.

When was the last time Denmark won the World Cup?

Denmark is not one of the powers in this sport and has never won this event. Its best showing was a quarterfinal appearance in 1998. That side finished second in Group C, behind host France, before securing its most significant World Cup result, a Round of 16 victory over Nigeria, which came by a 4-1 score. The team then took a 1-0 lead on Brazil in the quarterfinals before falling to the South Americans, 3-2.

Can I listen to Denmark in the World Cup on the radio?

If you secure access to SiriusXM, you can not only listen to all of Denmark’s matches in this competition, but you can also listen to each of the other contests. Nearly all of them will be on channel 83 while eight will instead be on channel 157. Denmark’s match with Australia on November 30 is the only one that this country plays that might be broadcast on channel 157.

When did Denmark qualify for the World Cup Qatar 2022?

Denmark was one of the first teams to qualify for this prestigious event, doing so on October 12, 2021, in its third-to-final match of the qualifying group stage. That was a 1-0 win over Austria that came at home in Copenhagen. At that point, through eight qualifying matches, the Danes had scored 27 times and allowed none. (A 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands and a 2-0 loss to Scotland followed.)

Who is the captain of Team Denmark?

Simon Kjaer wears the armband during Denmark’s matches. The 33-year-old has more than 120 caps for his country while also playing in at least 25 club matches for six different sides in five countries. After his country qualified for the 2022 event, he said that he and his teammates had become “hungrier” for more and more success and that “we can go a long way” at the WC.
